CO-OPERATION MEANING
The word Co-Operation is derived from the Latin
word co and operari, in which co means with and
operari means to work, so co-operation means to
work together.

SECTION 4 of the Co-Operative ACT, 1912,

defines cooperatives as A society which has its
objectives the promotion of economic interest, its
members in accordance with co-operative principles.

CO-OPERATIVES IN INDIA (HISTORY)
The Co-operative moment in India origin Agriculture & Allied sectors.

At the end of the 19th century, the problems of rural indebtedness and the consequent
conditions of farmers created an environment for the chit funds and co-operative
societies.

Enactment of Co-operative Credit Societies Act, 1904.

Under the Government of India Act, 1935, cooperatives were treated as a provincial
subject.

In order to cover Cooperative Societies with membership from more than one province,
the Government of India enacted the Multi-Unit Cooperative Societies Act, 1942.
PRESENCE OF CO-OPERATIVES IN INDIA

During the British rule, Nicholson a British Officer in India suggested to

introduce Raifferson model of German agriculture credit cooperatives in India.
As a follow-up of that recommendation, the first Cooperative Society Act of
1904 was enacted to enable formation of Agricultural Credit
Cooperatives in villages in India under Government sponsorship. With the
enactment of 1904 Act, Cooperatives were to get a direct legal identity as
every agricultural Cooperative was to be registered under that Act only.

The National Cooperative Union of India (NCUI) was established in 1929 as an

apex promotional organisation for strengthing for cooperatives.

National Cooperative Development and Warehousing Board was set up in

1956.
