Creating Elevations, Sections,


and Details
Objectives
Use the Project Navigator to create a 3D model of a building.
Create elevations, sections, and details using the elevation and
section marks tools located on the Callouts panel and tool palette.
Revise the display of the elevation based upon changes in the model
using Refresh (2dSectionResultRefresh) and Regenerate
(2dSectionResultUpdate) commands.
Edit the dimensions and subdivision of the projection box for
elevation or section objects.
Create live sections and model views from pictorial views of a model.
Modify lines of a section or elevation using the 2SectionResultEdit,
2dSectionEditComponent , and
2dSectionResultAddHatchBoundary commands.
Create and modify 2D Section/Elevation styles.
Create keynote and dimension details using the Detail Component
Manager.
Steps to Creating a Model
1. Open the Project Browser
(select Project Browser from
Quick Access toolbar) set
your project current.

2. Select Close to close the


Project Browser and open
the Project Navigator.

3. Select the Levels button of


the Project tab to open the
Levels dialog box. Specify
values for floor elevation and
finish floor to finish floor
vertical distances for the
each level (foundation, floor
1, floor 2).

4. Select the Views tab of the Project Navigator.

5. Select the Views category, right click and


choose New View Dwg>General.

6. Edit the Add General View dialog, type


Model in the drawing edit field of the
General page. Click Next to open the
Context page, check Level 1, Level 2, and
Level 3 for Division 1. Select Next to open
the Content page, verify all constructs are
selected for the levels. Select Finish to
close the Add General View dialog box.

7. Double click on the Model view drawing in


the View tab to open the drawing as shown
at left.

1. Open the Project
Navigator, and select the
Views tab.

2. Open the model view


drawing.

3. Select Elevation Mark A1


from the Callouts tool
palette, and respond to
the workspace prompts
as shown below:
Specify location of elevation
tag: (Select a point near
p1, to place the callout.)
Specify direction for
elevation: (Select a point
near p2 , to specify the
direction of view.)

4. Place Callout dialog box
opens as shown at right,
type North in the New Model
Space View Name edit field,
verify that Generate
Section/Elevation and Place
Titlemark are checked, set
scale to 1/4"=1'-0", then
check New View Drawing to
open the Add
Section/Elevation View
dialog box.

5. Edit the Add
Section/Elevation View
dialog box as follows:
Type Exterior
Elevations in the
name field, of the view
drawing in the General
page. Click Next,
verify levels and
constructs are
selected in the Context
and Content pages.
Select Finish to close
the dialog box.

6. Respond to the remaining
workspace prompts.)

region: (Select a point near
p3 to define the start
location of the projection
box.)
Specify opposite corner of
elevation region: (Select a
point near p4 to define the
size and content of the

Specify insertion point for the 2D
elevation result: (Select a
point near p5 to locate the
coordinates of the new
elevation view.)
(The elevation is created in a
new view drawing named
North.)

7. To view the elevation
select the Views tab of
the Project Navigator,
double click on the
Exterior Elevations view
drawing.
8. To place this elevation
on a sheet, create a new
sheet in the Sheets tab.
Select the Elevations
sheet category, right click
and select New>Sheet.
Type A-111 in the number
field and North
Elevation in the title field.
Check Open in drawing

9. Click OK to dismiss the
New Sheet dialog box
and open the drawing.
10. Select the Views tab of
the Project Navigator,
select the North
drawing, right click and
choose Place on
Drawing.
11. Drag the view to the
sheet and left click to
position the view on the
sheet

Properties of the Building Elevation Line
A Building Elevation
Line is created in
the model view
drawing.

Updating an Elevation
Refresh (2DsectionResultRefresh)-updates the elevation based upon the original
settings of the elevation. To Refresh the elevation select the elevation, right-click and
choose Refresh.

Regenerate (2DsectionResultUpdate)-updates the elevation allowing revision of


original settings. Additional objects may be added to the selection set for the elevation.
To Regenerate the elevation select the elevation, right-click and choose Regenerate.

Elevation Styles

Elevation styles can be created to apply display


settings for all elevations of the elevation style.
Styles can be created to create custom display
components that have special layer, color, lineweight
and linetype properties.
Elevation styles are located in the Documentation
Objects\2D Section/Elevation Styles folder of the
Style Manager.

Select an elevation choose Edit Style
from the General panel of the 2D

Editing Elevation Linework

The 2DsectionResultEdit command allows you to edit entities of an


elevation.
To access 2DsectionResultEdit command select the elevation and
choose Edit from the Linework panel as shown above.
Hatch pattern is temporarily turned off.
Lines of the elevation can be erased or modified to a display component.
Upon completion of the edit select Finish from the Edits panel.

Select a closed polyline for boundary: (Select the polyline at p1 as shown below.)
Erase selected linework? [Yes/No] <No>: y (Type y to erase the polyline; the 2dSectionBoundary dialog
box opens, select the Erase or Limit purpose and specify material to apply the boundary. Choose OK to
dismiss the dialog box.)

Creating Section Views
When you place a section mark, you
are prompted to specify the cutting
plane line, viewing direction, and the
location of the section.
The Section can be created in the
current drawing, an existing view
drawing or a new view drawing.

Accessing the Live Section
The Live Section creates a view of the model that removes the display of objects in
front of the cutting plane line.
View the building in an isometric view.
Access the LiveSectionEnable, select a building section line, choose Enable Live
Section of the Live Section panel.
Accessing Detail Callouts
Placing a Detail Callout-1
1. Open a view drawing
2. Select Detail Boundary (Rectangle)
Specify one corner of detail box: (Select p1.)
Specify opposite corner of detail box: Select p2.)
Specify first point of leader line on boundary: (Select p3)
Specify next point of leader line: ENTER
3. Place Callout dialog box opens, type Bath 1 in the New Model Space View field.
4. Click New View Drawing to open the Add Detail View dialog box.

5. Type a name for the view drawing, Bath Details.
6. Click Next to open the Context page; check divisions and levels for the view drawing.
7. Click Next to open the Content page; verify the constructs of the view drawing.
8. Click Finish to dismiss the Add Detail View dialog box.

AEC Modify Tools
LineworkTrim will trim AEC objects beyond a trim line.
LineworkDivide will divide an AEC object allow each

LineworkExtend will extend lines, open polylines, or arc to
an implied edge of an AEC object.
Linework subtract will erase content of the object enclosed
within a polyline.
LineworkObscure will mask or hide an object or detail
component.
LineworkMerge command will merge closed polylines,
hatches, or mass element extrusions
LineworkCrop command will screen out portions of objects
and entities that extend outside a boundary.
