Aim & Objective

Stainless steel is cheaply available in the market and it is well known for its
corrosion resistance, but it finds poor in its hardness and wear resistance.

Most of the Stainless steel find its application towards house hold applications,
kitchen utensils, surgical equipments.

But the same material can also be used for higher applications by improving its
wear resistance and hardness.

Our project aims in improving the wear resistance and hardness of SS 410
Material, improve its life.

Ex: steam turbine blades, components subjected to sea water etc.

Materials Used:
Material identified for the research work is AISI 410

Chemical Specification:
Carbon : 0.15%
Manganese : 1%
Silicon : 1%
Sulphur : 0.03%
Phosphorous : 0.04%
Nickel : 12.24%
Chromium : 11.5%

Mechanical Specification:
Tensile Strength : 590 Mpa
Compressive Strength: 350 Mpa
Elongation : 20%
Reduction Area : 45%
Properties of 410 SS:
Higher corrosion resistance

Higher work hardening rate

Higher hot hardness

Higher ductility

Attractive appearance

Lower maintenance
Various Surface Heat Treatment Process
Annealing, Normalizing, hardening
Nitriding
Carburizing
Cyaniding or carbo nitriding
Flame hardening
Vacuum tempering - etc.
Purpose of Annealing and Vacuum
Tempering
Obtain high surface hardness
Increase wear resistance
Improve fatigue life
Improve corrosion resistance
Smooth surface finish
Experiments Done So Far:

The component has been full annealed for 2 different timing parameters
30 min, 120min. Vacuum tempering process is done for 10 min, 30 min,
120 min & 180 min.
Comparison between the following materials are yet to be made
Untreated specimen
Specimen 1 - FA1
Specimen 2 FA2
Specimen 3 - VT 1
Specimen 4 VT 2
Specimen 5 VT 3
Specimen 6 VT 4
Hardness measurement :

The hardness value were being compared with the untreated specimen by
Rockwell hardness measurement.
Untreated specimen - 3 HRC
Specimen 1 - FA1 - 4-5 HRC
Specimen 2 - FA2 - 0 HRC
Specimen 3 -VT1 - 42-43 HRC
Specimen 4 - VT2 - 43-44 HRC
Specimen 5 - VT3 - 42-43 HRC
Specimen 6 - VT4 - 45-46 HRC
