LECTURE 7
Mixed Dislocation

Most of the dislocation consist of both edge and

screw dislocation called mixed dislocation.
Characteristics

In a mixed dislocation, the edge and the screw

character changes from point to point.
In an Edge dislocation, b is perpendicular to t.
In a Screw dislocation, b is parallel to t.
Characteristics(contd..)

b vector is resolved into two components:

Parallel to t ->screw component
Perpendicular to t ->edge component
Components of mixed dislocation
Edge component=bsin
Screw component=bcos
Stress fields

A stress field is a region in a body for which

the stress is defined at every point.
Upper part there is compression and lower part
there is tension.
Interaction between two dislocation is repulsive due
to stress fields.
Slip bands

We have seen that due to continous application of

stress new Dislocation are generated . Also, these
dislocation move when stress is applied.due to both
these dislocation lines move to surface .
A collection of several such dislocation is called slip
band.
Frank Read Source

A Frank-Read source is a mechanism that explains the

generation of multiple dislocations in specific well-
spaced slip planes in crystals when they are deformed.
When a crystal is deformed, in order for slip to occur,
dislocations must be generated in the material.
Therefore during deformation, dislocations must be
primarily generated in these planes.
It was proposed by and named after British
physicist Charles Frank and Thornton Read.
Cold working of metal increases the number of
dislocations by the Frank-Read mechanism.
Mechanism
Consider a straight dislocation on a slip plane and the points A and B. If a shear
stress is applied on the slip plane, then a force F= .bx is exerted on the dislocation
line, where b is the burgers vector and x is the distance between the points A and B.
This force acts perpendicular to the line AB and induces the dislocation to extend
and curve into an arc.
The bending force is opposed by the line tension(Gb 2) of the dislocation that acts at A
and B, along the direction AB and away from A and B. When the dislocation becomes
a semicircle, all of the line tension is acting against the bending force induced by the
shear stress, because the line tension is perpendicular to the horizontal between A
and B.
For the dislocation to reach this point, the equation F= .bx=Gb 2 satisfy. When we
solve this equation, we get the shear stress to be =Gb/x. This is the stress required
to generate dislocation from a Frank-Read source. If the shear stress continues to
increase and the dislocation crosses the semicircular state, it will spontaneously
continue to bend and grow and will spiral around A and B until the segments
spiralling collide and cancel.
