All Children are to be Considered
General Education Students First
Inclusion involves different teaching styles and ultimately
gives practices of good teaching.
As exemplary teachers we want to do what we can to help
all children, and develop ways to reach out to all of them.
Having a teacher and student connection is essential, and
we have to find these connections in different ways.
Continued..
Inclusion is providing more options for
children in ways to learn.
What you may do for all of the children
may not work for all of them. This is
why forming relationships and getting
to know the students is essential.
We want to build a classroom where
ALL of the students will learn.
Different Historical Views
Brown vs. Board of Education (1954)
Civil Rights movement (1950's)
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) (1990)
Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973
Requirements of a Law
I.D.E.A- Reauthorization and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation
Act of 1973 require that individuals with disabilities are to
receive free and appropriate public education (FAPE) which
must occur in the least restrictive environment (LRE), with
supplementary aids and services, when deemed necessary.

Adapted from:http://idea.ed.gov/
Least Restrictive Environment
To the maximum extent possible, children with
disabilities, are educated with children who are
not disabled, and special classes, separate
schooling, or other removal of children with
disabilities from the general education
environment occurs only when the nature of the
severity of the disability of the child is such that
education in the general class with the use of
supplementary aids and services cannot be
achieved satisfactorily. Section 612 (a) (5) (A)
Adapted from:http://idea.ed.gov/part-c/statutes
Key Ideas of LRE
Applies to all children with disabilities
The general education class is always the first choice
Must be individually determined and meets student's
individual needs
Consideration and use of supplementary aids and services
to make general education class and first option
Supplementary Aids and Services

Aids, services, and other supports that are provided in

general education classes or other education-related
settings to enable children with disabilities to be educated
with non-disabled children to maximum extent.
Working with students who have IEP's and 504's in the
general education classroom, and making sure to use and
execute the accommodations provided to the student.
What is
Inclusion?
General Education class is the primary
placement; services are brought to the
student.
Decisions are based on the ability of the
student to benefit from the placement.
a term which expresses commitment to
educate each child, to the maximum
extent appropriate, in the school and
classroom he or she would otherwise
attend

Great Websites to Check Out
These are some fantastic websites to look at and where I
found a lot of material on Inclusion. This is a big idea, so
there is a lot to say. You will find benefits, reasons why it
helps, and so much more.

We need to give each other the space to grow, to be
ourselves, to exercise our diversity. We need to give
each other space so that we may both give and
receive such beautiful things as ideas, openness,
dignity, joy, healing, and inclusion.
