Molar Volume of a Gas
Hand in report sheet from
Beers Law lab.
LAST LAB TODAY! - MOLAR
VOLUME OF A GAS

After Lab = Check out.

We will be cleaning your

lab drawers, making sure
all your equipment is
present, clean, not
broken, etc
EXPERIMENTAL SUMMARY

TODAY YOU WILL BE WORKING IN

PAIRS
Purpose
Measure the gas production of a chemical
reaction
Changes in pressure
Determine the molar volume of the gas
produced in the reaction
Calculate the molar volume of a gas at STP
DETERMINING THE VOLUME OF YOUR
FLASK
Insert the rubber stopper
into a 125 mL flask
Use a china marker or tape
to mark the bottom of the
flask, as shown
Remove the stopper, and
fill the flask to the marked
line with water
Use a 100mL graduated
cylinder to determine the
total volume of the flask
This may take several portions
Record this volume in the data
table
SETT ING UP

Make sure the 125 mL flask is completely dry

Weigh one piece of Mg ribbon, record the
mass, and add it to the flask.
Use a 600/800 mL beaker to prepare a water
bath
Fill the beaker about 2/3 full
SE TTI NG U P YOUR P R E SSU R E SE N SOR

Connect pressure sensor to channel one.

Connect temperature probe to channel two.
SETTING UP YOUR PRESSURE SENSOR

Attach the pressure sensor to the

rubber stopper as shown in the sample
set-up
Close the valve on the stopper
Obtain about 20 -25 mLs HCL solution
in a 50 mL beaker
Use your 50 mL little beaker fill it no
more than half way.
This will be enough to do the 3 trials.
Draw 5 mLs into the syringe
Attach the syringe to the two-way valve
Submerge the flask in the water bath
COLLECTING DATA

Press the Play button to begin data

collection
After 20 seconds has elapsed
open the two way valve
Depress the plunger to add all 5 mL of HCl
to the flask
Pull the plunger back to the 5 mL
position
Close the valve
Keep the flask submerged in the water
bath for the entire reaction
10 mins
Under a snorkel vent, remove the
stopper to allow the gas to escape
Dispose of the reaction mixture in the
waste container provided
Examine your data
WHEN THE TRIAL IS FINISHED
REPEAT THIS PROCEDURE

3 trials total
Syringes must be washed and dried after all
3 trials are completed
Step 15 Unscrew (do not pull!) syringe from the
stopcock. Rinse the syringe 3X with di water. Draw
up about 20 mL of water into the syringe, reconnect
it to stopcock assemnly with stopcock open. Flush
stopcock and taper valve connector. Make sure you
do not get water into the tubing that leads directly
to the pressure sensor this will damage sensor.
Remove plunger from syringe and invert stopper
assembly on rack you got it from. Plungers can be
placed in the bin next to the rack.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS

Goggles and gloves are to be worn at all

times
HCl is a corrosive acid. Handle with care
If any Mg is remaining in the flask after the
reaction is finished, add several mLs of HCl
before pouring it into the waste container.
Be sure to clean lab benches before leaving
WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE LEAVING
