Mentorship site
- My mentorship site was a very relaxed environment with families
usually in and out throughout the day.

- Sometimes there were only two people in the gym and sometimes
there were 100, it just varies on what is going on that day.

- There was not a specific requirement as far as dress code, as long

as clothing was still appropriate.

- The only rule really was no shoes unless designated basketball

shoes are allowed on the court.

What Is ISM
ISM or Independent Student Mentorship is a collegiate program where
students are given the opportunity to focus on a particular occupation
for the cause of research. By allowing students to participate in this
course! essentially they are given real world experience in specific
career that interest the. Two days a week students are allowed to travel
during class to their mentorship site in order to shadow their mentor.
Students are required to visit with their mentor for three hours a week
and create a final presentation on their specific area of study.
Basketball Marketing and Training
- The development and marketing of players is a key aspect in
getting high school athletes scholarships at top colleges.

- Development is done through AAU teams, individual training

sessions, and group training sessions.

- Marketing is important because it gives players the publicity they

need in order to be recognized by college basketball coaches and
recruiters.

AAU
My Mentor
- An average day for Dusty consists of not only coaching, but
scheduling, managing, film watching, and social media marketing.

- Several individual or group sessions in one night may be followed

by one or two team practices.

- Networking with coaches and recruiting young athletes is also one

of the important aspects of coach Dustys job.
Basketball Training and Marketing
I chose to focus on the publicity and training of individual players
for my ISM project this semester because it showcases the procedures
involved in order to get high school student athletes into top level
schools. Coach Holbrooks job is to prepare these athletes so they can
play at their optimal potential. By developing the athletes shooting and
ball handling skills, he is giving them many of the tools needed to play
at the collegiate level. Also, a key factor of Coach Dustys job is the
publicity of his players. By creating a spotlight on a player Dusty is able
to draw the attention of many college coaches giving the player the
greatest chance of getting a scholarship.
Background information on Basketball

Basketball was a sport created to be a safer alternative to

football. Invented in 1891, in Springfield, Massachusetts
by a P.E. teacher named James Naismith, basketball
grew and became a well favoured pastime throughout
the 20th century.

Initially, there were nine players total on each team and

two peach baskets were used for hoops.

A very simple list of only thirteen rules were created and

quickly the popularity of the sport grew tremendously.

Levels of play
- Players may begin playing at a recreational level eve as early as the
age of five.

- Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) sports begin usually at the

intermediate age level where players are held to more of a
competitive standard.

- In school play usually begins at around 7th grade and can be played
until 12th grade. ( most serious athletes play on a high school and
AAU team)

- Division I,II, III and Junior college schools offer opportunities for
athletes to then participate at the next level and play college
basketball.
Division I, II and III Schools

In division one schools the graduation

rate is 83%, divisions two schools is 71%
and division three is 87%.
Division one has: 176,000 student
athletes and 346 colleges and universities
Division two has: 118,000 student
athletes
Division three has: 187,00 student
athletes and 439 colleges and universities

high school student athletes: 541,500
NCAA student athletes: 18,700
Percent moving from high school to NCAA: 3.5%
Percent moving from NCAA to professional: 1.1%
Scholarships
- In many cases scholarships are the only reason that some student
athletes will attend college. Some athletes in less developed areas
even make a point out of the fact that if it was not for sports that
they would not be in college, and they would probably be getting
into trouble in the streets. Also, many students often times do not
have the grades required to apply for academic scholarships so
sports, whether it's basketball or football or tennis, serve as a new
opportunity for them to continue their education while also doing
what they enjoy.
Recruitment
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PKBROd84UEU

- recruiting is a term used to describe for the process in which college

coaches add prospective student athletes to their roster each
off-season. This process typically culminates in a coach extending
an athletic scholarship offer to a player who is about to graduate
from high school or a junior college.
Significance of Trainers
- Film

- Individualized training

- Marketing

- Publicity
Development of Players through training
and drills
- Training is used to individualize a player's experience by focusing
on one or more aspect that the player needs to work on. (perfecting
strengths and eliminating weaknesses)

- Drills can be focused inside the Paint, three point line, half court,
or even full court.

- Drills work on ball handling, shooting, footwork, agility, defense,

and many more key aspects in the sport of basketball

- Drills ranging in difficulty and intensity can be manipulated to

benefit each player.

Tangible Item
- A written diagram showing the runthrough of two drills, one being
simple and one being more complex.
Film
- Film is broken down play by play in order to analyze the players
strengths and weakness so that Coach Holbrook can design
individual plays for individual players.

- Film can be shown not only to show what a specific player is doing
but also as an example to other players. ( Dos and Donts)

- Most games are recorded and even some some training sessions
are recorded too, because its easier to show someone what they
are doing wrong opposed to trying to explain it .
Publicity and Marketing
- College coaches love to see the it players. The hype of the
player is one of the most important aspects of being recruited.
Hype is extravagant publicity or promotion. The probability of a
player being recruited increases dramatically when a player is well
known. Although it helps them become noticed, hype is not
everything. A a player still has to be good and back up all of the
flash. Also, college coaches also love the hyped players
because they draw attention to their organization.
Importance of social marketing
and Youtube can all be used in
order to promote and hype
players.

- College coaches follow

AAU/high school coaches and
players in order to find
upcoming potential recruits

- The more well viewed a player

is the better.

- Athletes can also create

recruiting accounts where they
Prospects
- One of coach Holbrooks more well
known players in this area is Savion
Flagg, a 67 guard from Alvin high
school.

- He also played with the Houston

Defenders Under Armour Team for his
AAU season.
4 star wing Savion Flagg commits to Texas
A&M
- Savion Flagg is one of my mentors top recruited players and has
trained with Coach Dusty for many years. During many of my hours
shadowing, Savion was also at the gym working hard and going
above and beyond in his training.

- Savion Chose to commit to A&M after months of consideration

between eight SEC schools. After the summer of playing with his
AAU under armour team Savion averaged outstanding rebounds,
points, assists, blocks and steals. His combined stats have allowed
him to be ranked a four star recruit.

- Out of all 2017 prospects Savion is ranked number 55.

Significance
- Without the marketing and development of players through training
sessions and publicity it would be a very intense and complicated
process in gaining scholarships for college.

- Being recruited would become more of a local thing because

coaches would be unaware of the talented players across the
country.
Why I chose my presentation topic
I chose to do my presentation over the marketing and publicity of
players because it really highlights the significance coach Holbrook has
on all of the players that he works with. Through training and publicity
he is able to showcase and assist athletes in order for them to reach
their optimal potential and become recruited.
