Environmental laws concerned with
construction of
multi purpose dams
Some of the acts/laws are :-

Forest conservation act - 1980
environmental protection act 1986
water act
Public health act
Rehabilitations and resettlement act
prevention and control of pollution act

Some of the Authorities involved are :-

Ministry of environment, forest and
climate change
Ngos.
Reason for the environment issues

Impacts due to project location:-

Resettlement & rehabilitation of displaced family

Forests and forest land
Nature reserves
Grazing lands
Water resources inside the project area

Impacts due to project location:-

Hydrological balance
drainage
passage
Reason for the environment issues

Impacts due to construction works:-

Soil erosion
Construction spoils
Public health

Impacts due to project operation:-

Residue of agro chemicals

Impact on soils
Ground water
Changes in surface water quality
Water related diseases

Effects of dam on earth crust:-

Reservoir triggered earthquakes koyna dam (maharastra), india ,

Example for
Environmental laws concerned with
construction of
multi purpose dam
Dibang project (rejected under environment act)

Indias largest dam, the dam to be built across the Dibang

river, in the
north eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh.

A 3,000 MW project, Dibang dam will not only generate

power but
supposedly control floods in the plains of neighboring
Assam state.

The Dams reservoir was estimated to submerge 5,000

hectares of dense
forest along the dibang river which would lead to cutting
down of huge
3.24 lac trees.
Involvement of authorities

1) National disaster management authority Pancheswar dam

project on mahakali
River
(Uttrakhand-Nepal).

2) Ngos and R&R authority Narmada valley project (sardar

3) Ngos and R&R authority Chandil & Icha dam (Jharkhand).

4) ministry of environment, forast and climate change Dibang

dam
