Pakistan joined the United Nations on September 30 1947
Relations with India

SEATO
In September 1954, Pakistan joined the South
East Asia Treaty Organisation (SEATO) or the
Manila Pact.
Members (Australia, France, Great Britain,
New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Thailand
and the U.S.)
Objective:- to resist attack and counter
subversive activities and promote cooperation
for economic progress and social well being.
The Baghdad Pact/CENTO
Pakistan joined the Baghdad Pact in September
1955 (renamed CENTO-Central Treaty
Organisation-in 1959 after Iraq's withdrawal)
The members of the Baghdad Pact agreed to
cooperate with each other in the field of
defence and security.

Pakistan and the Muslim World:
Pakistan's relations with the Muslim states,
particularly the states of the Middle East,
touched new heights of cordiality and trust.
Gulf region extended economic assistance
(investment, grants, and loans on soft terms) and
diplomatic support to Pakistan.
1980-90: AFGHANISTAN AND
PARTNERSHIP WITH THE
UNITED STATES
Insurgency in Kashmir:
outbreak of insurgency in Indian administered
Kashmir in 1989.
India and Pakistan agreed on a framework for
peaceful interaction when Indian Prime Minister
Atal Behari Vajpayee visited Lahore in February
1999.
However, it failed because Kargil region of
Kashmir during May-July 1999.
Going Nuclear:
The last major development in this phase was
the decision of India and Pakistan to become
overt nuclear powers.

Indias nuclear explosions.

September 11 and Fight Against Terrorism:
Pakistan played a vital role in this war against
terrorism as it shared border with Afghanistan.
