ANGULAR MOMENTUM
What is Angular
momentum?
a property characterizing the rotary inertia of
an object or system of objects in motion about
an axis that may or may not pass through the
object or system
a quantity that is conserved when there are no
external forces acting
it can be transferred, but it cannot be created
nor destroyed
a vector quantity, requiring
the specification of both a
magnitude and a direction
for its complete description
Angular Momentum
Angular momentum of a point object

L mvr
Angular momentum of an extended object

L mr

L I

Direction of Angular Momentum:
Right Hand Rule is applied

is positive when object rotates in CCW

is negative when object rotates in CW

Appropriate MKS OR SI units:

kgm2/sec
Sample problem

Given: m=1.1kg
v=3.2m/s
r=0.28m
Find: =?
Formula:
Solution:

L mvr

L 1.1(3.2)(0.28)

L 0.28(3.52)

L 0.99kg m 2 / s
Sample problem
Given: =12 rad/s
I=15 kg
Find: =?
Solution:
=
=15 kg (12 rad/s)
= /s
Angular Momentum
(Fundamental)
External force:
momentum changes
No external force:
momentum is constant
Location of object
does not matter
Conservation of
Angular Momentum
The principle of
conservation of angular
momentum, states that
angular momentum is
conserved if no net torques
are involved. (Source:

APPLICATION OF
ANGULAR MOMENTUM
When quarterbacks throw the football,
they impart a spin with their fingers, so
that the ball spins rapidly as it flies
through the air.
The path of almost any kicked, thrown or
bowled ball is generated by angular
momentum.
The angular momentum of charged
particles relates to the concept of
magnetic moment from
electrodynamics.
Riding in a roller coaster
It explains why an ice skater spins
faster when drawing her arms
close to her body, and slower
when stretching her arms outward.
It also explains why a compact
star, such as a white dwarf, spins
very fast, whereas the large star from
which it was formed rotated much
more slowly.
