Exploring Latitude and Longitude

SS3G2 Locate and describe the equator, prime meridian, and lines of latitude and longitude
on a globe.

SS3G1 Locate major topographical features on a physical map of the United States.
a. Locate major rivers of the United States of America: Mississippi, Ohio, Rio Grande,
Colorado, Hudson, and St. Lawrence.
b. Locate major mountain ranges of the United States of America: Appalachian, Rocky.
Standards:

Essential Questions:
How can I use a map to find locations in the world?, How can I locate lines of lines of latitude and longitude on
a map?, Why are lines of longitude and latitude used to find locations?, Where are the prime meridian and
equator located on a globe?, Where are major rivers and mountain ranges located in the United States?

Goal: Students will understand that latitude and longitude help humans locate place in the world. Students
will locate major rivers and mountain ranges in the United States.

Role: Students will take on the role of a teacher in the class and explain to students about latitude,
longitude, and topographical features.

Audience: 3rd Grade Social Studies Students

Situation : Students will research and apply knowledge on how to find the latitude and location of 2 major
rivers and mountain range in the United States and teach students information facts about each river and
mountain range.
Product, Performance and Purpose : Students will create a presentation (via Nearpod, PP, Prezi, etc.)
in group of 2-3 to identify and locate the latitude and longitude of three topographical features of the United States (2
rivers and 1 mountain range). Student will also teach students 3 facts about each of the features (Length or Height,
location, and one interesting Piece of Information).

Materials: Nearpod (Teacher Created), Chromebooks, Day 1-3 Ticket Out the Door, Social Studies Interactive
Notebook

Exploring Latitude and Longitude Lesson


(Students will complete lesson during S.S. segments of 35 minutes during a 5 day span.)

Day 1: Teacher will start lesson by asking students how they can locate places on the Earth. Teacher will dictate responses on
anchor chart on easel at the carpet. Teacher will then use Nearpod lesson to teach students about latitude, longitude, the
equator, prime meridian, and how to use latitude and longitude I used to located information.
Day 2: Teacher will introduce lesson task to students. Students will work in groups of 2-3 to identify the latitude and longitude
of three topographical features found in the US from the list provided. After finding locations of three topographical features,
students will include three facts about each feature. Students will then create a presentation that will be shared with their
classmates about how they located the coordinates and the information they found out about each feature. The presentation can
be made by using one of the following presentation software tools including Prezi, Google Slides, Power Point, or any other
presentation software that is preapproved by the instructor.
Day 3: Students will work in class on presentation with groups finding the latitude and longitude of three topographical
features in the United States. After finding location, students will also research and find three facts about each feature.
Day 4: Students will work in class on presentation with groups finding the latitude and longitude of three topographical
features in the United States. After finding location, students will also research and find three facts about each feature.
Day 5: Students will share presentation and information with classmates. After student scomplete class presentations, students
will complete Latitude /Longitude Quiz. After completing quiz, students will complete journal response and answer the following
questions: How can I locate lines of lines of latitude and longitude on a map?, Why are lines of longitude and latitude used to find
locations?
