Looking at the following expressions, who has the most

YouTube subscribers? How can you prove it?

Someguy93: 7500 + n + 6300

KSwag4257: 12 + 900 + n
Strategy: Isolate the Variable

Using the Inverse Operation

When presented with an expression
where we have a variable, and we
dont know what it represents, we
need to use the Inverse Operation to
find out what that variable is
Inverse Operation means
Operations: Opposite Operation

Addition (+) So when we need to use

Subtraction (-) the Inverse Operation, we
are using the
Multiplication (x)
to what is
Division () seen
Opposite operations

If you see addition you must use subtraction

If you see subtraction you must use addition
If you see multiplication you must use division
If you see division you must use multiplication
Example

y + 57.5 = 109.5 Step 1: Write out the expression.

Example

Step 1: Write out the expression.

y + 57.5 = 109.5 Step 2: Look for the operation used.
Example

Step 1: Write out the expression.

y + 57.5 = 109.5 Step 2: Look for the operation used.
y + 57.5 57.5 = 109.5 57.5 Step 3: Use the inverse operation on
both sides of the equation.
Example

Step 1: Write out the expression.

y + 57.5 = 109.5 Step 2: Look for the operation used.

y + 57.5 57.5 = 109.5 57.5 Step 3: Use the inverse operation on

both sides of the equation.
y = 52 Step 4: Write out your finished
expression.
Example

Step 1: Write out the expression.

Step 2: Look for the operation used.
y + 57.5 = 109.5
Step 3: Use the inverse operation on
y + 57.5 57.5 = 109.5 57.5 both sides of the equation.
Step 4: Write out your finished
y = 52 expression.
52 + 57.5 = 109.5 Step 5: Check your equation by
plugging your answer in for the
variable.
Example 2

6x = 87 Step 1: Write out the expression.

Example 2

both sides of the equation.
Example 2

Step 1: Write out the expression.

6x = 87 Step 2: Look for the operation used.

6 6 x = 87 6 Step 3: Use the inverse operation on

both sides of the equation.
x = 14.5 Step 4: Write out your finished
expression.
Example 2

Step 1: Write out the expression.

Step 2: Look for the operation used.
6x = 87
Step 3: Use the inverse operation on
6 6 x = 87 6 both sides of the equation.
Step 4: Write out your finished
x = 14.5 expression.
6 x 14.5 = 87 Step 5: Check your equation by
plugging your answer in for the
variable.
Example 3

Step 1: Write out the expression.

31 = 7x + 3
Step 2: Look for the operation used.
Example 3

Step 1: Write out the expression.

31 = 7x + 3 Step 2: Look for the operation used.

both sides of the equation.
Example 3

31 = 7x + 3
Step 1: Write out the expression.
31 3 = 7x + 3 3 Step 2: Look for the operation used.
28 = 7x Step 3: Use the inverse operation on
both sides of the equation.
28 7 = 7 7 x
Example 3

31 = 7x + 3 Step 1: Write out the expression.

31 3 = 7x + 3 3 Step 2: Look for the operation used.
