RATIO AND PROPORTION

Ratio of two numbers a and b can be written as:

a to b, a : b, or a/b
where a is called the antecedent and b is called the
consequent.

Proportion is a statement of equality between two

ratios.
In the following proportion:
a : b = c : d or a/b = c/d
where b and c are the means.
a and d are the extremes.
d is the fourth proportion to a, b, and c.
RATIO AND PROPORTION
Mean Proportional
The mean proportional (x) to two terms a and b is
a/x = x/b
x2 = ab
where x is the mean proportional.
Properties of Proportion
1. Proportion by Inversion: If a/b = c/d, then b/a = d/c.

2. Proportion by Alteration: If a/b = c/d, then a/c = b/d.

3. Proportion by Composition: If a/b = c/d, then (a + b)/b = (c

Mixture Problems
Many real-world problems involve mixing different
types of substances.
This type of problem can be solved by taking into
account the amount of species in each solution that
you are mixing.
Examples:
1. A manufacturer of soft drinks advertises its orange
soda as naturally flavored juice although it
contains only 5% orange juice. A new federal
regulation stipulates that to be called natural, a
drink must contain at least 10% fruit juice. How
much pure orange juice must this manufacturer
add to 900 gal of orange soda to conform to the
new regulation?
Let x = the amount ( in gallons ) of pure orange juice
to be added

5% 100% 10%
orange + orange juice

900 gallons x 900 + x

900(0.05) x(1) (900 + x)(0.1)
45 gallons + x gallons = (900 + x )(0.1) gallons
45 + x = 90 + 0.1x
0.9x = 45
x = 45/0.9
x = 50 gallons
2. Ten liters of 25% salt solution and 15 liters of 35%
salt solution are poured into a drum originally
containing 30 liters of 10% salt solution. What is
the percent concentration of salt in the mixture?

25% 35% 10% x%

WORK PROBLEMS
If a man can finish a job in X days, then
in one day he can only finish 1/X of the job.
If both X and Y are the number of days that each
man can work alone, then when they work
together they can finish it in t days such that

1 1 1

X Y t
Examples:
1. A 400 mm pipe can fill the tank alone in 5 hrs
and another 600 mm pipe can fill the tank alone
in 4 hours. A drain pipe 300 mm can empty the
tank in 20 hours. With all the 3 pipes open, how
long will it take to fill the tank?

1 1 1 1

5 4 20 t
t 2.5hours
2. Peter can paint a fence 50% faster than Dennis

Digit Problems
If u = units digit ; t = tens digits ; and h = hundreds
digits then
[100h + 10t + u] is the number.
The reversed number would be
[100u + 10t + h]
Examples:
1. The difference of the squares of the digits of a
two-digit positive number is 27. If the digits are
reversed in order and the resulting number
subtracted from the original number, the difference
is also 27. What is the original number?
Let ab be the number (3 + b)2 b2 = 27
(10a + b) 9 + 6b + b2 b2 = 27
6b = 18
a2 - b2 = 27 (condition 1) b=3
ab-ba=27 (condition 2) Therefore: a = 6

(10a + b) (10b + a ) = 27 The number is 63

9a 9b = 27
a-b = 3
a=3+b
2. Find the fraction such that if 2 is subtracted from
its terms it becomes , but if 4 is added to its
terms it becomes .
x

equate 1 and 2 : y 14
4x 6 2x 4 5
Thus, the fraction is .

Age Problems
Age problems are simply number-relation problems
that must be solved meticulously by giving
emphasis to the tenses.
Examples:
1. Six years ago, Nida was five times as old as Rina.
In five years, Nida will be three times as old as Rina.
What is the present age of Rina?
Past Present Future
Nida y-6 y y+5
Rina x6 x x+5

y6=5(x6) y + 5 = 3( x + 5 )
y = 5x 30 + 6 y = 3x + 15 5
y = 5x - 24 y = 3x + 10
3x + 10 = 5x 24
2x = 34
x = 17 years old
2. Patrick is now 18 years old and his brother, James
is 14 years old. How many years ago was Patrick
twice as old as James?
PAST PRESENT
Patrick 18-x 18
James 14-x 14
18 x 2(14 x)
18 x 28 2 x
x 10 years ago
Rate or Motion Problems
Unless otherwise stated, motion problems in
algebra deals with constant rate.
distance = (rate)(time)
d = rt

goes going upstream. If the velocity of the rivers
current is 8 kph, determine the velocity of the
boat in still water.

Let x velocity of the boat in still water

s2 dis tan ce traveled downstream
s1 s2
2
( x 8)t ( x 8) t
3
(3 x 24)t (2 x 16)t
x 40kph
2. A jogger starts a course at a steady rate of 8 kph.
Five minutes later, a second jogger starts the

= 10 km/60 min
s1 s2
8 10
t1 (t1 5)
60 60
t1 25 min
t 2 20 min
Clock Problems
In clock problems , it is important to know how the
movement of one hand is related to the movement
of the other hand.
HH = MH/12 where MH is in number of minutes
HH = SH/720 where SH is in number of seconds
Examples:
1. What time after 3 oclock will the hands of the
clock be together for the first time?

x X = 15 + x/12
X = 16.36 minutes

x/12

The time is 3:16.36
