Origen del Imperio Bizantino

Para asegurar el control del Imperio romano y hacer ms eficiente su
administracin, el Emperador Diocleciano, a finales del siglo III, instituy
el rgimen de gobierno conocido como tetrarqua, consistente en la
divisin del Imperio en dos partes, gobernadas por dos emperadores
augustos, cada uno de los cuales llevaba asociado un vice-emperador y
futuro heredero csar. Tras la abdicacin de Diocleciano el sistema
perdi su vigencia y se abri un perodo de guerras civiles que no
concluy hasta el ao 324, cuando Constantino I el Grande unific ambas
partes del Imperio.

Constantino reconstruy la ciudad de Bizancio como nueva capital en

330. La llam Nueva Roma, pero se la conoci popularmente como
Constantinopla ('La Ciudad de Constantino'). La nueva administracin
tuvo su centro en la ciudad, que gozaba de una envidiable situacin
estratgica y estaba situada en el nudo de las ms importantes rutas
comerciales del Mediterrneo oriental.
Constantino fue tambin el primer Emperador en adoptar el cristianismo,
religin que fue incrementando su influencia a lo largo del siglo IV y termin por
ser proclamada por el emperador Teodosio I, a finales de dicha centuria, religin
oficial del Imperio.

A la muerte del emperador Teodosio I, en 395, el Imperio se dividi
definitivamente: Flavio Honorio, su hijo menor, hered Occidente, con capital en
Roma, mientras que a su hijo mayor, Arcadio, le correspondi Oriente, con
capital en Constantinopla. Para la mayora de los autores, es a partir de este
momento cuando comienza propiamente la historia del Imperio bizantino.
Mientras que la historia del Imperio romano de Occidente concluy en 476,
cuando fue depuesto el joven Rmulo Augstulo por el germano (del grupo
hrulo) Odoacro, la historia del Imperio bizantino se prolongar durante an
casi un milenio.

El arte llevar la marca del
Imperio: autocrtico, cristiano
y grecoriental. En el ao 380,
bajo el emperador Teodosio,
el cristianismo se convirti en
la religin oficial del Imperio.
Desde ese momento, poltica,
religin y arte se mezclaron.
CONCEPCIN SIMBLICO-RELIGIOSA DEL ARTE:

a) Creacin de un edificio que representa el mundo y el cielo que la

cubre: la iglesia cubierta con cpula.
b) Creacin de unas formas plsticas fuertemente naturalistas en las
que, recurriendo a una serie de convencionalismos (frontalidad,
hieratismo, contraposicin del mundo material mundo espiritual...)
fijen la idea espiritualista del mundo.
c) Creacin de modelos fijos que posibiliten la comprensin de los
dogmas de fe y al mismo tiempo queden fijados de forma permanente,
imposibilitando cualquier desviacin de los creyentes.

FUNCIN: exaltar la grandeza sobrenatural del Emperador y de la

Iglesia.
INFLUENCIAS romanas, paleocristianas, helensticas y orientales.
 Es un arte de la trascendencia y el lujo no de la realidad y de la
razn. Debe deslumbrar e imponerse a los sbditos, a los fieles y a
los pueblos vecinos.
Todo posee un valor simblico y narrativo.
Inters por resaltar las figuras, que aparecen en un slo plano. Se
repite montonamente el mismo prototipo, visto generalmente de
frente.
Su misin es contribuir al placer del Emperador, de los miembros de la
aristocracia y de los dignatarios de la Iglesia.
El arte trata de ser la expresin de la autoridad absoluta, de la
grandeza sobrehumana.
