What is Chemistry?

Chemistry is the study of matter and its changes from

one substance to another.
Chemistry is called the central
science as the next slides
illustrate.

What is science, anyway?
A systematic exploration of How things
work
A search for underlying knowledge with
predictive power
sciens is Latin for having knowledge
What is science, anyway?
Is conducted on an evidentiary basis, not
conjectures (pseudo-science)
We have even adopted the legal language of
laws
If we understand a process well enough, we
are confident that repeated trials will
yield predictable outcomes
The Scientific Method
Science is dynamic -- its just our current
understanding
Involves observation and measurements
Science attempts to identify variables that
control a situation
The lack of scientific understanding leaves
you vulnerable to being duped by charlatans!

Study Everyday!! A 3 unit class requires at least 06 hours/week of study
Dont fall behind you will never catch up!!!
Always ask for help when you need it dont wait.
Working in groups is very helpful IF you have the right group!!!
Read the chapter and/or lecture notes before class to familiarize yourself with
the material.
