The people of the Cordillera
Region, comprised of the
Isneg(Apayao),(Tinguian),
Kalinga, Bontoc, Ibaloi,
Kankoney, have their particular
way of life that infuenced their
tradition.

WOODCRAFTS

Wood is the Raw material of the people of the Cordillera


Region in Manufacturing of almost all their possesions.
Bamboo is also used together with clay, bronze,brass and
iron.
The Cordillera Art can be divided into two types: the
Decorative and the Ritualistic or Magical. Shields,
containers are examples of the decorative type while
Bulol and other religious images belong to the ritualistic
type.
The technique by which the cordillera region artist
transform raw materials into works of art make them
distinctive as people. Rhythm symmetry and persistence
is said to be the technique of mastery of the artist
specially those from Ifugao and Bontoc.
Cordillera region art specially in wood carving can be
The portrayal of human form is profusely illustrated in
various postures and degrees of abstraction such as
standing or squatting or with arms straight or cross etc.
This portrayal is found mainly in Bontoc, Ifugao and
Ibaloi.
The portrayal of animal motifs is widespread in
woodcarving, blanket designs and bamboo incisions such
as reptiles and that of pigs and plant motifs.
Non figurative art is also found in the shapes and designs
on shields, spears and head axes. This objects make
effective use of the elements of rhythm and symmetry.
Adoration in gods and supernatural beings were
expressed through the rituals and art of the cordillera in
general. The high artistic quality of the region
woodcrafts showing both human and animal motifs is a
characteristic of the area. The social demands for their
woodcrafts serve as an opportunity for the artist to
display their carving skill and technique.
MUSIC

The cordilleran's have also their musical instrument


aside from woodcraft . Some of the musical instrument
are :
1.) Pas-ing a two stringed instruments of the
Apayao
2.) Albon, Sulibao and Kanlinga drums
3.) koleleng a nose flute
4.) Diwdiwas a conmstruction of thin bamboo pipes
of different lengths tied together.
Ifugao house -due to the cold climate in the cordillera
region the Ifugao construct their houses in a manner that
assures their protection from the low temperature and
rains.

The Muslim south where the minority Muslim population


is concentrated as about nine ethnic linguistic groups.
WOODCRAFTS

The predominant materials of muslim art are wood,


brass, and cloth but no less important are silver, gold,
iron, horn, ivory, leather, bamboo, and matting materials.
The Muslim okil or wood carvings is best represented by
brass work and where one sees a rare blending of the
aesthetic the utilitarian and the social purposes.
As a brave and freedom loving people , the muslim
filipinos developed a wide assortment of weapons. This
weapons are invariably dignified and softened by artistic
effects
Muslim carving is highly skilled well- developed and broadly
based art. Muslim artists are very [particular in their choice of
wood for carving specially in carving weapon handles. The
carving artist do not usually follow a written design or blueprint.
They carve directly from a mental image or template of a form to
fit the raw material being worked on.
Although non figurative art is predominant among muslim
filipinos there are a number of notable figurative types found
among them. The most obvious is the Maranao Sarimanok where
both bird and fish representation are clearly depicted.
The use of brass of ivory implies that the muslim filipinos are
active in a mobile group.

The muslim in the south has an art that is a part of a


wider regional artistic tradition that cut across political
boundaries. Muslim Filipino arts therefore has a common
derivation from a similar artistic source found in the
Philippines, indonesia and malaysia due to anthropological
conditions such as geography, trade and ideology.
