AN-AAA Access Network-AAA

HA Home Agent

FA Foreign Agent

ZXPDSS provide users with high-speed

packet data services.
Function of PDSN

As an access gateway , PDSN (Packet Data Service Node) provides MS

with services for Internet access and Intranet access. PDSN acts as an
interface between Radio Network and Packet Data Network.

PDSN is the core switching device of PDSS system.

Provides the mobile station with Simple IP access service and Mobile IP
access service. In Simple IP,PDSN acts as a Network Access Server (NAS),
while in Mobile IP,PDSN acts as Foreign Agent (FA) for MS.

At the CDMA2000 1X stage, the maximum access rate available for each
subscriber is 153.6kbps, and at the CDMA2000 EV-DO (Evolution Data Only)
stage, the maximum access rate available for each subscriber will be as
high as 2.4Mbps.

PDSN acts as a client of AAA server.

Function of AAA

The AAA is Authentication, Authorization, and Accounting Server.

It is a RADIUS server. AAA authenticates user script file information,

authorizes data services authorization, and implements the accounting function.
AAA also establishes new accounts of the data service and performs
management function

The AAA can be classified to visiting AAA, and home AAA.

The visiting AAA is located at the service network and correlates with
PDSN in the service network.

The home AAA is located at the home network and correlates with the
HA in the home network in case of mobile IP. If the MS has no roaming
function, the service AAA and home AAA are integrated.
Function of AN-AAA

The AN-AAA authenticates EV-DO user script file information and the
legality of the EV-DO user terminal identity; in another word, the AN-
Level authentication.

In the cdma2000 EV-DO network, an EV-DO user accessing the

network is authenticated by AN-AAA, instead of the HLR.

In ZXPDSS system, AN-AAA can be configured independently or in

combination with AAA..

AN-AAA is only used in CDMA2000 EV-DO network.

Function of HA

The ZXPDSS HA is like a router in the MS home network.

HA is responsible for maintenance of the current location information

of the MS, and setup of the relationship between MS IP address and
MS transfer address. The MS has to register to HA when leaving the
home network. When receiving a data packet delivered to MS, HA will
transmit the data packet to the forwarding address (care-of address)
of the MS via the security tunnel between HA and FA. Then the
forwarding address will deliver the packet data to the MS, thus
completing mobile IP functions.

Assigns MS home IP addresses after authenticated by AAA.

Only use in Mobile IP.

Other entities

OMC server
OMC provides operation and maintenance services to the network
operator, manages the registered subscriber information and conducts
network planning to enhance the overall working efficiency and service
quality of the system. We also call OMC as background.
Service agent
The service agent provides local service processing and user
management. A PC-compatible machine is used as the service agent
hardware.

Application server
The application server provides the external interface for remote
service processing. A PC server is used as the application server
hardware.

Applications of ZXPDSS
System service

Supports simple-IP service and mobile-IP service

Supports 1X user access and EV-DO user access

Access to public IP network or private IP network

Supports multiple ISP to access the system

Supports IP address binding

Supports Permanent Online Service

Supports PDSN local authentication

Simple IP Access

Simple-IP Access

Similar to the access by dialing-up modem in the fixed telephone

network, simple-IP access serves to assign dynamic IP address to the MS
each time, so it only provides data communication with the MS as the
calling party, and MS can not be a called terminal.

When MS spans the PDSN, the ongoing data communication will

break down, and will not continue unless you have a new call.
Mobile-IP Access

Mobile-IP Access

Mobile-IP provides the MS a permanent IP address to be

connected to an IP public network or private network. Mobile IP can
provide data communication with the MS as the called party.

Accomplishing the data communication with MS as the calling

party or the called party, and holding data communication connecting
when MS cross PDSN . Mobile-IP provides an IP routing mechanism,
which makes it possible for the MS to access any IP public or private
network with a permanent IP address.

Access to public IP network or private IP network

Supporting user access to a public IP network and user access to a private IP

network such as an enterprise network using VPN technology.
Access to a public IP network
A user can be connected to a public IP network through the ZXPDSS system to
use various services and share abundant resources provided by the Internet.
Access to a private IP network
The function of the access to a private IP network is known as the Virtual
Private Network (VPN) service function. By using IP tunnel technology(L2TP), and
IP security technology of the ZXPDSS system, a corporate user can be remotely
connected to the private network inside the enterprise that the subscriber works for,
and the MS is authenticated by the internal AAA server of the enterprise or
corporation.
The user can use various services and resources provided by the server
securely and reliably as if the user were directly connected to the internal network.

BTS
Supporting Multiple ISP

Supporting multiple ISP to access the system

The ISP access the system in the same mode as the data VPN
service.
PDSN is responsible for the LAC functions, and ISP provides the
LNS.
The system connects the user with the LNS of the corresponding ISP,
in L2TP mode.
Home AAA finishes the first accessing authentication, while ISP AAA
implements secondary authentication to the user.
Supporting IP address binding

Supporting IP address binding

Subscribers can only have the dynamic IP addresses in the

standard simple-IP service, so the IP addresses are different in
each dialing time.
All the users can only make a call but can not be called. In
another word, the other hosts in the network cannot actively
access this mobile terminal.
Using ZTE's IP address binding technology, ZXPDSS system
can assign a fixed IP address upon inter-PDSN handoff of
simple IP access user, and supports point-to-point
communication, dynamic video monitoring and other functions
which are only supported by the mobile IP communication.
Supporting Permanent Online Service

PDSS supports permanent online subscribers and holds specific

service terminals, such as bank service terminal and video monitoring
terminal. In permanent online mode, the system maintains the service
connection and makes it free from release due to timeout. It also
detects the activity status of the terminal, and automatically activates
the terminal which is in dormant status.
PDSN local authentication

When AAA is down, PDSN conduct local

authentication .PDSN local authentication is just a redundant function

for AAA authentication service to make sure that the network is accessible.

In case the AAA sever is restored, PDSN will stop local authentication at once, and

send the Authentication request to AAA.
