Standards are chromosomes

of the

Smart Infrastructure
With no apologies to my esteemed friend Richard Schomberg
Definition of Smart Cities

The ISO Technical Management Board (TMB) in its 63rd

meeting held on 17-18 June 2015 passed a resolution and
approved the working definition of a Smart City in ISO as
follows:
''Smart City'' should be described as a city that:
dramatically increases the pace at which it
improves its sustainability and resilience, by
fundamentally improving how it engages society,
how it applies collaborative leadership methods,
how it works across disciplines and city systems, and
how it uses data and integrated technologies in
order to transform services and quality of life to
those in and involved with the city (residents,
businesses, visitors)

The Key Economic & Social Driver for SMART

GRID Initiatives Globally is nothing but Energy
Efficiency.

The goal is to create a smart grid that will

change the way power is deployed for
sustainable energy around the world.

It will transform the way we use Energy

The Imperatives:

The success & failure of the new Electricity

Infrastructure shall highly depend on the
Electronics, IT & Telecommunication
Technologies used & deployed.

A single mistake in choosing the wrong

technology might result in a set-back that
shall take many years to rectify the
problems and move forward in the right
direction, and thus, jeopardizing the
progress of the nations itself

designing with secure n sustainable dna Copyright @ narnix 2016

The Imperatives:

The technological trends in Smart

Homes, Smart Buildings, Smart Cities
& Smart Grid are being considered and
pursued in isolation from each other by
the respective stake holders. In fact, they
form a very tightly interwoven &
homogenous confluence of similar
technologies being applied in different
domains for a common cause of making
our planet earth smart, green n secure.

The most profound technologies are
those that disappear

They weave themselves into the fabric

of everyday life until they are
indistinguishable from it

designing with secure n sustainable dna Copyright @ narnix 2016

The Internet of Things (IoT):

Most Disruptive Technology of the decade

Disruptive technology, is the bearer of
tremendous opportunity and equally, a
harbinger of obsolescence.
Technologys impact on society and business is
substantial, if not underestimated.
Though product cycle times are accelerating,
the underlying technologies unfold over many
years.
Within each trend there are multiple enabling
technologies, all at various stages of maturity
and adoption.

Defining the IoT Systems:

Internet of Things is all about

heterogeneous and aware
devices interacting to simplify
peoples life
in some way or the other

designing with secure n sustainable dna Copyright @ narnix 2016

Hurdles in fast growth of IoT:
It is difficult for innovation to happen
across disjointed platforms & technologies

Creating the opportunity for ecosystem partners to

work across common open platforms facilitates
faster innovation
designing with secure n sustainable dna Copyright @ narnix 2016
Hurdles in fast growth of IoT:
The IoT value chain is perhaps the most diverse
and complicated value chain of any industry or
consortium that exists in the world.
In fact, the gold rush to IoT is so pervasive that if
you combine much of the value chain of most
industry trade associations, standards bodies,
the ecosystem partners of trade associations
and standards bodies, and then add in the
different technology providers feeding those
industries, you get close to understanding the
scope of the task.
In this absolutely heterogeneous scenario,
coming up with common harmonized standards
is a major hurdle.

Smart Cities & Smart Infrastructure
A sample Indian business case for next 5-10 years:
200 million Smart Electricity Meters are going to be procured & deployed
under the NSGM (National Smart Grid Mission).
All these Smart Meters are going to use 200 million Communication Modules
and minimum 0.4 million Gateways/DCUs (Data Concentrator Units).
Smart Streetlights are going to use more than 100 million Communication
Modules and at least half a million of DCUs/Gateways
Smart Buildings are going to deploy more than 50 million smart Sensors and at
least 100K 200K DCUs/gateways
Automobiles shall be using at least 100-200 million communication nodes for
Vehicle O & M, V to V, V to I & other telematics applications
Similarly, various applications of the Smart Infrastructure paradigm like Smart
Water, Smart Gas, Smart Traffic, Smart Environment, Smart sewage Disposal
etc. are going to use a few billions of Smart Sensors with Communication
Modules
To summarize, India ALONE, is going to need a minimum of 5 - 10 billion
Communication modules to be integrated into the Smart Sensors and
Controllers and 10 50 million Gateways that shall be needed to
operate and maintain the Nation Wide Critical Infrastructure that needs
to be deployed to enable and empower the citizens to lead a
sustainable, safe and secure life

One of the most challenging Imperatives
for
Standard Development Organizations

Harmonization of Standards
in
Smart Homes, Smart Buildings, Smart Grid & Smart Cities
for
smart, sustainable & secure communities

Critical Infrastructures:

Critical Infrastructure are the assets that

are essential for the functioning of the
society and economy.

Those facilities, systems, or functions,

whose Incapacity or destruction would
cause a debilitating impact on national
security, governance, economy and
social well being of a nation.

designing with secure n sustainable dna Copyright @ narnix 2016

Critical Infrastructures:

A few essential components of the

Critical infrastructure are:
Smart City
Smart Health
Smart Water
Smart Surveillance
Smart Grid
Smart Street Lighting etc.
They all need highly reliable
Communication Backbone.

designing with secure n sustainable dna Copyright @ narnix 2016

Critical Information Infrastructures:

The critical Information Infrastructure is

the backbone and foundation of any
modern society/community today.

Those ICT infrastructures upon which, the

core functionality of Critical Infrastructure
is dependent.

designing with secure n sustainable dna Copyright @ narnix 2016

The contrast:

The contrast between IT and critical

infrastructure networks is the fact
that humans are the central feature
for IT networks, but are only a side
focus of critical infrastructure.
In fact, the more effective and
capable a critical infrastructure
network becomes, the less a human
will be involved in any way.

The Smart Meter:
A chain is only as strong as its weakest Link

currently the weakest link in the Smart Grid

Signal Chain is our Smart Meter.
A robust Communication & IT Infrastructure shall
be no good if we continue to use the Meters,
which are not Equally Secure. So, the new
imperative for the Metering Industry is to Design
not simply a Smart Meter but a Smart &
Secure Meter.

designing with secure n sustainable dna Copyright @ narnix 2016

The Smart Meter:

Otherwise, an enemy nation shall not need any Nuclear

Weapons to bring our nation down; they would need just a
bunch of good Hackers to get thru our Smart Meters (maybe
thru a In Home Display Unit or a User App on a Mobile Phone
or Tablet) into the Command Centre of our Smart Grid
Network and shut down the power to the nation causing
unpredictable catastrophe

designing with secure n sustainable dna Copyright @ narnix 2016

The Imperatives:

It is imperative to explore these crucial

aspects of our new Electricity
Infrastructure; the challenges, the current
Practices & Technologies, Architectures,
Interfaces & Protocols.
And, identify the way forward for Unified
& Secure Communication Architecture
to provide a Scalable, Versatile & Robust
Communication Backbone for the Next
generation Electricity Infrastructure.

The Interplay
Smart Grid Smart Cities
The relationship between Smart Grids and Smart Cities
needs to be understood in this context:

In a smart city, energy, water, transportation, public

health and safety, and other key services are managed in
concert to support smooth operation of critical
infrastructure while providing for a clean, economic and
safe environment in which to live, work and play.

Hence, the perspective in Infrastructure Design for any city

has undergone a paradigm shift with advent of
convergence and networking technologies, solutions for
information, communication, entertainment, security and
surveillance; which are beginning to have a profound
impact on the way we look at the Buildings Design (be it
residential or commercial) and Town Planning.

Coordination, collaboration and harmonization can be

better implemented by the effective use of open,
common and shareable, information and communication
technologies that allows the creation of a truly
interconnected system with seamless communication
between services. Even though the services and
applications can be diverse, they could leverage the use
of common infrastructure to achieve this objective.

There is also a recursive cycle to the data in a Smart City.
Information that is generated is information that is
consumed which in turn adds to the information
generated which becomes information used again.

The Final Imperative:
Unified & Secure Communication Architecture,
Protocols and Interfaces for
Critical Information Infrastructure Deployments.
The need for proven, scalable, and standards
based solutions for Critical Infrastructures
deployment scenario, with inherent complexity
and tradeoffs, requires specialized, skilled, and
multi-stakeholder engagement. THUS, we need
to undertake this task of global importance,
which shall make a significant contribution in
building a Robust Foundation for Critical
Information Infrastructures along with paving
ways to make our community smart, green n
secure.

designing with secure n sustainable dna Copyright @ narnix 2016

The Final Imperative

To delve, deliberate, peruse the Standards,

Technological & Interface Models being
considered or deployed globally and come up
with Unified and Harmonized Set of Documents
Defining the way forward for all the stakeholders of
Smart Grid, Smart Home, Smart Building, Smart City,
Smart Infrastructure, rather the Comprehensive &
Collaborative Homogenous Ecosystem
encompassing the Critical Infrastructures
Deployments globally.

Dichotomy
The question on one hand:
Who is going to invest in developing New
products, systems and solutions based on the
UNIFIED, HARMONIZED & SECURE Information &
Communication Architecture or even a
Framework for such a heterogeneous scenario
with such diverse challenges, when there is
absolutely NO Co-ordination or even realization
of the problems each stakeholder is going to
face in the very near future?

designing with secure n sustainable dna Copyright @ narnix 2016

Dichotomy
The question on the other hand:
Who is going to create the Architecture
and/or Framework, if there is no demand
or even realization of this NEED?

designing with secure n sustainable dna Copyright @ narnix 2016

The Way Forward:

designing with secure n sustainable dna Copyright @ narnix 2016

Systems Approach the IEC way

The multiplicity of technologies and their

convergence in many new and emerging
markets, however particularly those involving
large-scale infrastructure demand a top-down
approach to standardization, starting at the
system or system-architecture rather than at the
product level.

Therefore, the Systems Work will define and

strengthen the systems approach throughout the
technical community to ensure that highly
complex market sectors can be properly
addressed and supported.
