What is RBI ?
RBI is the central bank of India
The Reserve Bank of India was established on April 1, 1935 in accordance with
the provisions of the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934.
The Central Office of the Reserve Bank was initially established in Calcutta but
was permanently moved to Mumbai in 1937. The Central Office is where the
Governor sits and where policies are formulated.
Though originally privately owned, since nationalization in 1949, the Reserve
Bank is fully owned by the Government of India.
What is Governor?
one that governs:
As,
a : one that exercises authority especially over an area or group
b : an official elected or appointed to act as ruler, chief executive,
or nominal head of a political unit
c : a member of a group that controls or directs an institution
Functions of Governor of RBI
Maintaining the financial stability in the economy
Issuing licenses to open new private and foreign banks.
Controlling the interest rates on deposits.
Maintenance of foreign exchange market.
Responsible for leading and supervising primary co-operative banks
which are in more popular terms known as Urban co-operative
banks. He does this through his Urban Banks Department.
Facilitating flow of credit to rural, agricultural and various small scale
industries sectors.
Dr.Urjit Ravindra Patel

Urjit Patel, is an Indian economist, consultant and banker.
He is 24th Governor of RBI. Before he was the Deputy Governor of
Reserve bank.
Profile :-
Patel obtained his Bachelor's in Economics from the London School of
Economics , M. Phil. degree from Oxford University in 1986. He
received his doctorate in Economics from Yale University in 1990.
Dr. Raghuram Govind Rajan
(04-09-2013 to 04-09-2016)

Raghuram Rajan is an Indian economist who served as the 23rd


Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, and is currently serving as the
Vice-Chairman of the Bank for International Settlements. He was chief
economist at the International Monetary Fund from 2003 to 2007,
the youngest to occupy the position.
Profile :-
Rajan has a degree in electrical engineering from IIT Delhi (Gold
Medalist). PGDBA from IIM Ahmedabad (Gold Medalist). PhD from MIT
Sloan School of Management.
Dr. Manmohan Singh
(16-09-1982 to 14-01-1985)
Manmohan Singh was the 15th Governor of Reserve bank.
During his tenure comprehensive legal reforms were carried out
related to the banking sector and a new chapter introduced in the
Reserve Bank of India Act and the Urban Banks Department was set
up.
Profile :-
Singh did his Bachelors of economics And masters of economics from
Punjab university. Did his PhD from Cambridge university. And D.Phil.
from university of oxford
