IBM is committed to environmental leadership and continual improvement of its
Environmental Management System (EMS).

Environment: Surroundings in which an organization operates, including air, water, land, natural
resources, flora, fauna, humans and their interrelation.

EMS : Part of an organization's management system used to develop and implement its Environmental
Policy and Manage its Environmental aspects.

ISO 14001 : An international standard that specifies a process for controlling and improving an
organization's environmental performance. This Standard is made by International Organization for
Standardization

Continual Improvement : Recurring process of enhancing the environmental management system in


order to achieve improvements in overall environmental performance consistent with the organizations
environmental policy.

Environmental aspect : Elements of an organizations activities or products or services that can interact
with the environment. Ex. Stack Emission.

Environmental impact : Any change to the environment, whether adverse or beneficial, wholly or partially
resulting from an organizations environmental aspects. Ex. Air Pollution.

Corrective action : Action to eliminate the causes of a detected nonconformity.

Preventive action : Action to eliminate the cause of a potential nonconformity.


P.D.C.A. Cycle
This international standard is based on the methodology known as Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA).
Plan: Establish the objectives and processes necessary to deliver results in accordance with the
organizations environmental policy.
Do: Implement the processes
Check: Monitor and measure processes against environmental policy, objectives, targets, legal and
other requirements, and report to the results.
Act: Take actions to continually improve performance of the environmental management system.

1 Provide a safe and healthful workplace and ensure that personnel are properly trained and
have appropriate safety and emergency equipment.
2 Be an environmentally responsible neighbor in the communities where we operate, and
act promptly and responsibly to correct incidents or conditions that endanger health, safety,
or the environment. Report them to authorities promptly and inform affected parties as
appropriate
3 Conserve natural resources by reusing and recycling materials, purchasing recycled
materials, and using recyclable packaging and other materials.
4 Develop, manufacture, and market products that are safe for their intended use, efficient in
their use of energy, protective of the environment, and that can be reused, recycled or
disposed of safely.
5 Use development and manufacturing processes that do not adversely affect the
environment, including developing and improving operations and technologies to minimize
waste, prevent air, water, and other pollution, minimize health and safety risks, and
dispose of waste safely and responsibly.

Applicability
Within a location this applies to processes wherein there
exists a likelihood of Hazardous waste generation.
DG room, UPS room, Electrical room, Maintenance Store room,
Rest room, Pantry, Cafeteria, Parking area, Dispatch room, ITS Store room etc.

Responsibility:
Facility Manager - Responsible for complying with legal requirements, overall
monitoring of the Waste management and update/report to ETL

Facility Executive (Tech) Responsible for Implementing and to update the Haz
Waste Inventory.

Responsible for collecting, handling, segregating, transferring and quantifying the


Haz-waste.

Requirements:

To achieve IBMs Hazardous Waste Management programme


goal, each location shall prepare a hazardous waste survey
through an Inventory. This survey shall identify:
a. source (building, collection tank),
b. composition,
c. annual quantity,
d. method of treatment or disposal, and
e. cost of (or savings from) treatment or disposal

Requirements
Hazardous Waste shall be stored as per EP-4, EP-5 and HWM Rules,
2003 requirements, with secondary containment, labeling and exclusive
storage space.

Haz-Waste Management Plan shall be developed for all hazardous


waste streams

Maintenance Supervisor/Personnel shall be designated and trained for


safe collection, segregated handling and transfer of Haz Waste

Appropriate PPEs to be used.

Legal Compliance / Requirements

1. Hazardous Wastes Authorization, for all the hazardous


wastes streams on-site, from the State Pollution Control Board
(SPCB)

2. Apply to the SPCB for Renewal of Authorization, before its


expiry.

3. Store Hazardous Wastes in designated secured places which


shall be appropriately designed and provided with requisite
signage's & proper secondary containment.

4. Display on-line data outside the Main Gate (on an


Environmental Information Board)

5. Ensure that "Used Batteries" are not discarded in any other


manner except by depositing - Authorized recycler.

Authorized Vendors

EMP6: STORAGE AND SPILL MANAGEMENT

Hazardous wastes should be stored at site in appropriate


containers, with adequate secondary containment
and must be labelled.

Ensure compliance to storage containment requirements, secondary


containment capacity is best determined for the Location should be
no less than 110% of the largest container within the containment
area

An inventory (in Form 3) of quantum of Hazardous waste generated on site


shall be maintained and authorized by FM.

Daily checks for leak detection shall be conducted and authorized by the site FM.
