KANLUNGAN

The Oncology Diagnostic and Therapeutic Center

Background and Nature of the Project
Hospitals may be classified in a different specialization, such as by location,
specialty, or by its size, such as specialty hospitals, community hospitals, or tertiary-
care and academic medical centers
In the Philippines, cancer ranks third in leading causes of morbidity and mortality
after communicable diseases and cardiovascular diseases (DOHHIS, 1996)
Unfortunately, cancer has not been perceived as a significant health problem in the
Philippines.
At present, most Filipino cancer patients seek medical advice only when
symptomatic or at advanced stages
On the other hand, the highest incidence of deaths due to malignant neoplasm
(cancer) in the Philippines is the NCR and Region IV-A ranks as the second region.
(PSA Vital Statistics Report, 2011-2013)
Statement of the Problem

Lack of architectural considerations with the currently built hospital facilities in our
country
It shall be a facility that is patient-centered, concerned with its users
multidimensional aspects, e.g. spiritual and psychological.
The hospital facilities need a lot of physical and psychological improvement.
Additionally, there are just a few hospital facilities that specialize in cancer diseases
in the Philippines.
The proposed facility seeks to use architecture that seeks to improve the design of a
usual hospital in the Philippines, making it possible to incorporate architecture as a
tool of healing applicable to the countrys tropical climate.
Project Goal and Objectives

To provide an oncology diagnostic and therapeutic center that would be able to

deliver maximum and quality health care services for the users of the Oncology
Therapeutic and Diagnostic Center;
To provide a healthcare facility that incorporates well with the surrounding
development, neighborhoods and with the environment that maintains the multi-
dimensional well-being of cancer patients and medical staff, encouraging them to
live a quality life; and
To apply new methods in designing a specialty hospital, which incorporates function,
structural integrity, and the spirit of hospital architecture.
Significance of the Project

the establishment of a hospital that specializes with oncological diagnostic and

therapeutic needs that can help cancer patients overcome the psychological factors
from the aftermath of experiencing cancer, is encouraged.
help the locals to address cancer or health concerns within their reach with ease,
convenience, and accessibility without them having to travel for long hours.
will be a model on how specialty hospitals in the country should be designed and
treated. The project will have a great impact in the Philippines to have a healthcare
facility focusing on cancer patients.
Scope and Limitations
It will be located in Alabang, Metro Manila, serving its immediate vicinity, those who
live in NCR and CALABARZON.
The hospital is a public-private partnership (PPP) health facility under Department of
Health and Asian Hospital and Medical Center. The specialty hospital is categorized
as a Level 3 hospital
It provides particular forms of treatment, surgical procedure and intensive care.
Clinical service with specialty care is provided as well as the administrative and
ancillary services. Nursing care is provided with total and intensive skilled care.
The said project will cater only the leading cancers in the Philippines, lung cancer,
breast cancer, colon cancer, and leukemia, respectively.
