Child Abuse - Introduction
In 1999, the WHO Consultation on Child Abuse Prevention
compared definitions of abuse from 58 countries and drafted the
following definition:
Child abuse or maltreatment constitutes all forms of
physical and/or emotional ill-treatment, sexual abuse,
neglect or negligent treatment or commercial or other
exploitation, resulting in actual or potential harm to the
childs health, survival, development or dignity in the
context of a relationship of responsibility, trust or power.

Physical Abuse
This can include hurting children in many different ways
Non accidental marks tend to have a distinct shape or edge
to them
May be in places which are hard
to see eg burns behind ear

Emotional Abuse
Child is:
Ignored, put down/belittled,
Shouted at, terrorized
Told they are useless, stupid, wicked, unlovable, clumsy, unattractive, weak
Children can be harmed by witnessing abuse
An adult looking after you threatens to hurt you or leave you.

Long-term impact
All abuse and neglect have emotional effects

Sexual Abuse
An adult or older adolescent
Engaging in unwanted activities with a child whether by asking or pressuring
or threatening, or by other means like luring for money, chocolates, gifts,
hanging out, etc.
Indecent exposure of the genitals
Touching genitals/body parts with or without permission
Passing unwanted comments on body or gender
Affects the child psychologically even who see other child being abused

Neglect
Neglect is about the absence of caring
Failure of a caregiver to provide for the development of the child
where the caregiver is in a position to do so in one or more of the
following areas: health, education, emotional development, nutrition,
shelter and safe living conditions.
Left out of any child from his/her friend circle due to any discrimination
It has long term impact and emotional too
Affects the child psychologically

What should you do?
Never interact with nor accept anything from a stranger
At least trust one of your favorite elder
Dont hide any secret with whom you trust
Express your feelings and emotions with the elder you trust
Your body is your own and its your right to keep it private
If there is any doubt, discuss with the elder you trust
Love and care your peers and youngers.
Never be scared of any situation and raise the alarm immediately
