Introduction
Zeiss ultra optimeter is a part of optical comparators
Invented in 1934
In optical comparators the simplest way to measurement is that
graduation on the screen, being superimposed over the silhouette,
allow the viewer to measure, if scale was laid over the image
Availability of measurement is about 0.0025 mm
Many types of comparators:-
a) mechanical comparator
b) optical comparator
c) electrical comparator
d) pneumatic comparator
Principle
Based on Law of double
reflection of rays
Optics is applied to
Inspection of manufactured
part
Some Apparatuses Function

Green Filter : To make a green light, which is less fatiguing to the

eye
Condenser : Which is use for index mark project
Movable Mirror : For reflects the rays for particular length & depth
Objective Lens : To focus the rays at one point
Reticule : To make a projected image of index line
Zeiss Ultra-optimeter

The optical system of this instrument

involves double
reflection of light and thus gives higher
degree of magnification. A lamp sends light
rays to green filter, which filters all but
green light, which is less
fatiguing to the eye. The green light then
passes to a condenser which via an index
mark
projects it on to a movable mirror M1,
whence it is reflected to another fixed
mirror M2, and
then back again to the first moveable
mirror. The second objective lens brings
the reflected
beam from the first mirror to a focus at a
transparent reticule containing a precise
scale which
is viewed by the eye-piece
Continued.
The projected image of index line on the reticule can be
adjusted by means of screw in order to set the zero. When
correctly adjusted, the image of the index line is seen against
that of the reticule scale. The special end of the contact
plunger rests against
the outer end of the first movable mirror so that any vertical
movement of the plunger will tilt the mirror. The extreme
sensitivity of this instrument necessitates special precautions
in its
operation to avoid temperature effects.
Characteristic
Linear recording scale
High magnification
Quick in result
Minimum wear of contact point
High accuracy
Basically used in Labs as measuring instrument of small
job
To find out minor or extreme dimensions so that it used
in some industries
Drawbacks
The extreme sensitivity of this instrument necessitates
special precautions in its
operation to avoid temperature effects.
Electrical supply is necessary
Apparatuses are very large and expensive
When the scale is projected on the screen, it is essential
to use the instrument to a dark room to take reading
easily
