Basketball requires close coordination among the
team members. They play as a team and not as
individual players. They agree in the moves to take in
order to avoid errors.

In a similar vein, the subject and verb of a sentence


must agree. A verb must agree in number with its
subject. If the subject is singular, its verb must be
singular. If the subject is plural, then its verb must be
plural. The singular form of the verb ends in s. A
plural verb does not usually end in s.
SINGULAR PLURAL
She writes news. They write news.
The room is neat. The rooms are neat.
Ted walks fast. Ted and Nel walk fast.

1. A singular subject takes a singular verb; a plural


subject takes a plural verb.
A star shines. Stars shine.

2. The number of the subject is not changed by a


prepositional phrase after the subject.
This book for children is colorful.
The books on the table are new.
3. Each, every, either, neither, anybody, anyone, somebody,

are singular.
Everyone is invited.

4. When the words some, any, none, and all are followed by
a phrase, the verb agrees with the noun in the phrase.

5. A collective noun takes a singular verb when the group is


thought of, and a plural verb when the individuals are
thought of.
My Science class is putting up an exhibit.
My class are discussing plans for the exhibit.

6. A word that is plural in form but names a single object or


idea takes a singular verb. Examples are physics, news,
mathematics, civics, economics, measles, and civics.
Mathematics is an easy subject.
The news has reached him.

7. Agreement with compound subjects


a. A compound subject connected by and generally takes
a plural verb.

b. Compound subjects that are closely related or that refer


to the same person or thing take a singular verb.

c. A compound subject involving the use of each and every
