Unit 5 The U.S.

Civil War
When he ran for president, he
was almost completely
unknown.
Born in Kentucky, moved to
Indiana and then later to Illinois.
Before being president, he was a
successful lawyer.
A house divided against itself
cannot stand.
He said that the real issue is
between the men who think
slavery a wrong and those who
do not think it is wrong. The
Republican Party thinks it is
wrong.
John Brown led 18 men (black and white) to Harpers
Ferry, Virginia to raid the arsenal for weapons and
ammunition.
Hope was to start a rebellion against slaveholders by
arming African Americans with weapons.
He failed and was hung.
After the raid, Republicans argued that
secession was only a threat that was
aimed towards people who were going to
cast their vote for Lincoln.
Lincoln won the majority of electoral
votes and the popular vote.
Many of the Southern states never even
put his name on their ballot because they
opposed him so much.
With Lincoln elected, Southern states
begin to secede from the Union.

When Abraham Lincoln said that a house divided
against itself cannot stand, what did he mean?

He actually ordered the first
shots at Fort Sumter!
Lincoln was sending an
unarmed expedition to the fort
with supplies and the
Confederates opened fire on
the fort before the supplies
could arrive.
After the war, he was indicted for
treason, though never tried, and
remained a symbol of Southern
pride until his death in 1889.
You have travelled back in time. What would you say
to President Davis when he tells his advisers that he
wants to attack Fort Sumter? Why did you say that to
him?

Write in your notes your response

to President Davis.
