INTRODUCTION

Day by day we hear about the new inventions, new technologies about space
and it is happens only because of satellite. We always launches a satellite in
space for investigation.
In INDIA Indian Space Research organization (ISRO) make satellites and they
also concentrate on the accuracy and effectiveness of satellite.
There are number of technologies use for making satellites and also
ELECTRICAL PROPULSION is one of the most important and efficient
technology use in satellite.
The electrical propulsion is a machine that produces thrust to push an object
forward. Also it work on the principle of Newton third low of motion.
It is very efficient system and less fuel require for processing. And it reduces
the weight of satellite.
HISTORY
The idea of electric propulsion for spacecraft in 1911, introduced by
Konstantin Tsiolkovsky.
The first design and tested electric propulsion in the world was in 1929-1931
in Leningrad.
India launch first satellite successfully by using electrical propulsion
technology on 5 May 2017.
WHAT IS ELECTRICAL PROPULSION ?
The word propulsion means to changes the motion of body.
Electrical propulsion is the method which used to accelerate the spacecraft
and artificial satellite in space.
For that the electrical propulsion system produced a thrust for to push the
object forward. And it work on the principle of Newton third low of action
and reaction.
The main function of electrical propulsion is to reduce the weight of satellite
or spacecraft. Because the requirement of propellant in electrical propulsion
system is very less.
In that Ammonium, Hydrogen, Nitrogen, xenon gases use as a propellant. Also
energy can come from a battery, solar panel etc.
The speed of electric propulsion system is 10 times grater than conventional
systems i.e. 200,000 km/Hr.
GENERAL PRINCIPLES
The principle involve in electrical propulsion was formulated by Sir Isaac
Newton. According to third low of motion, for every action there is an equal
and opposite reaction.
If object A exerts force on object B, then object B also exerts an equal and
opposite force on object A.
We can say that AB = -BA
TYPES OF ELECTRICAL PROPULSION ?

Two types of electrical propulsion.

1. Electro thermal propulsion
2. Electrostatic propulsion
1. ELECTROTHERMAL ELECTRIC
PROPULSION
In Electro thermal electric propulsion system we heated the propellant i.e.
Ammonia, Hydrogen, Nitrogen electrically then it produces the hot gases.
After that the hot gas is thermodynamically expended and accelerated to very
high velocity through an exhaust nozzle.
Then the thrust ranges of 0.01 to 0.5 N and exhaust velocity is very high i.e.
1,000 to 5,000 m/s .
It provides low thrust continuously for long period.
It uses the electrical energy from battery and solar panels and itself it
generate the energy.
2. ELECTROSTATIC ELECTRIC PROPULSION

It also called as ion propulsion system.

In ion propulsion system creates a thrust by accelerating the ions.
In that we use coulomb force to accelerate the ions.
From fig (a) is ionization chamber also it has inlet for propellant and hot
electrode.
In ionization chamber we give xenon gas as a propellant through inlet and hot
electrode emits the electrons. The electron bombarded the xenon gas then
its atom becomes positively charge ions.
The electric potential between oppositely charged electrode grids attracts
the ions and accelerate them out the back of the craft to generate thrust.
ELECRO STATIC PROPULSION
APPLICTIONS

It is use for Interplanetary Missions.

International space station.
It is use in spacecraft.
It is use in missile.
ADVANTAGES

High exhaust speed much batter than conventional.

In electrical propulsion system less propellant consumption, greater efficiency
in the fuel utilization.
More energy available, less propellant required.
Continuous propulsion for longer time.
Also it reduces the weight of object.
EXPERIMENT
On 5 may 2017, India launch first
satellite with electrical propulsion i.e
GSAT-9 (South Asia Satellite).
BENEFITS :
The satellite will be flying only 25% of
fuel as compare to conventional.
Also reduces the weight.
Cost is low as compare to
conventional method.
Efficient technology.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ELECTRICAL
AND CONVENTIONAL
CONCLUSION

Electrical propulsion is very efficient method also the higher fuel efficiency.
