What is Multicultural Education?

Multicultural education refers to any form of education or teaching that


incorporates the histories, texts, values, beliefs, and perspectives of people
from different cultural backgrounds.
It is predicated on the principle of educational equity for all students,
regardless of culture, and it strives to remove barriers to educational
opportunities and success for students from different cultural backgrounds.
Objectives and Aims

To respect and appreciate cultural diversity.


To promote the understanding of unique cultural and ethnic heritage.
To promote the development of culturally responsible and responsive
curricula.
To facilitate acquisition of the attitudes, skills, and knowledge to function in
various cultures.
To eliminate racism and discrimination in society.
To achieve social, political, economic, and educational equity
The 5 Dimensions of Multicultural
Education

Content Integration - Transform the curriculum, make topics and issues the
focal points, view from a variety of cultural perspectives, social action.
Knowledge Construction - Reseachers and textbook writers influence the
way we learn, become critical thinkers, and consider multiple perspectives.
Equity Pedagogy - Modify teaching to include a variety of techniques and
to incorporate family and community culture of students.
Prejudice Reduction - Reducing prejudice in students and increasing
positive attitudes toward race and ethnicity.
Empowering School Culture - Extends into the school culture as a whole,
requires the whole staff, and work toward equity for ALL students.
Stereotypes vs Racism

Stereotype Racism
Stereotype is the assumption Racism is the belief that one race
about a group is superior to the other
They can be both positive or It is always negative

Racism goes beyond the thought
They are not confined to racial process and leads to action, such
groups, but other groups as well as violence towards minorities
(gender, disable, sexual
orientation, etc.)
