LOLITA

Jeremy Jaramillo
The Plot
A man by the name of Humbert goes over to the United
States for a job opportunity as a professor. Along the way
though, he comes across a landlady named Charlotte who
is infatuated by him. However, he doesnt really take
notice of her. Rather he puts his love and emotions into
her daughter: Dolores Haze. Who happens to be the ripe
old age of twelve. They eventually start an affair and the
rest is narrative history.
Friends Much more lively with her friends
She felt at peace while around them it seemed (since
the adults in her life didnt help with that)
Example:
Dolores: Later crocodile
Friend: In a while alligator
Friend: Real soon Dandy Dude
Dolores: Get fucked Daffy Duck
Dolores was a courageous girl but would never talk with her
mother like that.
Her Mother Has a very strained relationship with her mother
The strain possibly gotten worse due to Charlottes
jealousy towards Dolores since Humbert took a clear
interest in her daughter rather than her.
Proof:
Charlotte managed to get rid of her daughter and send her
off to summer camp. However, despite this, Humbert
continuously talked about Dolores. So Charlotte decides to
send Dolores off to boarding school so Humbert can focus on
her. However, her plan doesnt go accordingly as she is killed
shortly after discovering Humberts true feelings about her
daughter in his journal.
Her
Humbert had a very strange relationship with Dolores
(obviously). Especially considering he married her mother to

Stepfather/
get with her
He was the only one in the novel to ever nickname her

Lover/
Lolita
Made her seem more mature than her actual age

Abuser Example: When he states that she seduced him at a hotel

called the Enchanted Hunters
Makes Dolores also seem as a manipulative girl who lacks any
remorse for Humberts self being
Example: He goes to the grocery store to get groceries and
comes back to Lolita sitting on the bed with mud on his feet.
He realizes that she mightve been seeing someone and
telling them what has been going on so he begs her to tell her
but she just sits there unfazed. This leads to him getting
physical with her, but regardless she doesnt say anything
and instead laughs in his face, driving him insane.
Her Her husband comes into Doloress life after she runs
away fro Humbert

Husband He is around her age and isnt the most intelligent

being around but his gentle/kind, which is what
Dolores was looking for her entire life.
Shows his kindness by being soft-spoken and calling
Dolores Dolly instead of Lolita, which sexualized
who she was, and tried to help her as much as he
possibly could with the lack of finances that they
possessed.

In 1955, a novelist by the name of Vladimir Nabokov released a controversial novel so

taboo that even over 60 years after its publication date, it is still described as disturbing to the say

the least. The novels name you might ask? Well, its simply Lolita. However, despite the simple

title, the actual story inside this papered journey is anything but simplistic. To put it delicately,

the novel is about a man who starts an affair with a younger woman. The catch is that the

protagonist is an untrustworthy middle-aged gentleman named Humbert Humbert who lusts after

a twelve-year old girl named Dolores Haze and manages to get with her physically after

marrying her mother who happens to be his landlord in America. The main focus is not going to

be on Mr. Humbert though. Instead, we are going to analyze Dolores Haze/ Lolitas discourse

community since given the events that occurred in her life, shows how it affected her in her

social behavior as well.

Every girl at Doloress young adolescent age usually has female companions that they

could confide and play around with, and Doloress is no exception. She was social around people

her own age and developed friendships quite frequently when she was in an educational

environment. Her mannerisms/ vocabulary was much livelier and happier than when she was

with the adults in her life. For example, she converses with a friend and they start to part ways.

As theyre parting, Dolores goes See you later alligator and her friend chimes back In a while

crocodile. Her friend shortly after retorts Real soon, Daniel Boone and Lolita finally ends the

conversation with Get fucked Daffy Duck. Clearly, Dolores wouldnt ever discuss with her

mother with that kind of language because her mother wouldve shipped her off to boarding

school sooner than she already had planned.
