MONITORING AND CONTROLING

OF REMOTE INDUSTRIAL PLANT

USING SCADA
ABSTRACT
The main aim of the project is to process the real time data acquisition
under supervisory control. In large industrial establishments many processes go
on, therefore it is essential to monitor all the processes and control the factors
affecting them. Adapting a technology like SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data
Acquisition) one can achieve the above mentioned objective effectively, and thus
saving a lot of manpower.
For achieving this real-time scenario, a data logging system for a
remote plant operation is taken. Here temperature, voltage, current sensors, peak
and zero crossing detectors are duly interfaced to the 8051 microcontroller. Data
collected from the these sensors are constantly sent to the microcontroller which
is in turn connected to a PC. At the front end, DAQ System (software) is loaded
on the computer which takes these values and displays them on its front panel,
and also logs them in the database. One can set parameters like set point, low limit
and high limit on the computer screen. When the output of a sensor goes beyond
set point the microcontroller sends a command to the corresponding relay to
disconnect the load.
INTRODUCTION
Why SCADA ?

What is SCADA?

How SCADA works?

SCADA in industries.
Without SCADA
SCADA: supervisory control and data
acquisition is a category of software
application program for process control, the
gathering of data in real time from remote
locations in order to control equipment and
conditions.
Where it is used?
SCADA system components
Supervisory computers
Human-machine interface
Remote Terminal Unit(RTUs)
Communication infrastructure
Remote Terminal Unit
A RTU is a microprocessor-controlled
electronic device that interfaces objects in the
physical world to SCADA system by
transmitting digital data to a master system,
and by using messages from the master
supervisory system to control connected
objects.
PARTS OF RTU
Power supply
Digital inputs
Analog inputs
Digital outputs
Analog outputs
Software and logic control
communications
Communication infrastructure
This connects the supervisory computer system
to the RTUs and may use industry standard
protocols. RTUs operate autonomously on the
near-real time control of the process, using the
last command given from the supervisory system.
Failure of the communications network does not
necessarily stop the plant process controls, and
on resumption of communications, the operator
can continue with monitoring and control.
Some critical systems will have dual redundant
data highways, often cabled via diverse routes.
