What makes a sentence become a good sentence?

Melon hijau matang. (bukan kalimat)
Itu adalah melon hijau. (kalimat)
Ayah menyukai melon hijau. (kalimat)

In English, it also has normal sentence pattern:

Subject Verb Complement Modifier


John and I ate a pizza last night.
We studied grammar review last week.
SUBJECT

The agent of the sentence in the active voice


The person/ thing that does the action of the sentence
Every sentence in English must have a subject
May be a single noun

Coffee is delicious. Milk contains calcium.

The subject may be a noun phrase (a group of words ending with a noun)

The book is on the table. That new, red car is Aruls.


EXAMPLES OF SUBJECTS

Common subjects It and There can be subjects


We girls are not going to that movie. It is a nice day today.
George likes boats. There was a fire in that building last month.
Mary, John and I went to market yesterday. There were many students in the room.
The weather was very bad yesterday. It is raining right now.
VERB

Follows the subject.


Shows the action of the sentence.
Every sentence must have a verb.
May be a single word.
Common subjects It and There can be subjects
We girls are not going to that movie. It is a nice day today.
George likes boats. There was a fire in that building last month.
Mary, John and I went to market yesterday. There were many students in the room.
The weather was very bad yesterday. It is raining right now.
COMPLEMENT

Completes the verb.


Similar to the subject because it is usually a noun or noun phrase.
Every sentence does not require a complement.

MODIFIER

Tells time.
Tells place.
Tells manner of the action.
