Philosophy of History
Danilevsky, Spengler & Toynbee: History is like a wave. Society/Culture is like an organism
with a single life. (Criticized by Kreober and Sorokin)
Peter Ligeti, Frank Chambers, Charles Lalo: Study of Art Phenomena.
Northrop, Kroeber, Shubart, Berdyaev, Schwetzer& Sorokin: Integral Interpretation of
History: Basic conditions of rise and fall of nations invariably arise from within. In each case
the real cause of fall is the lowering of moral standards brought about by centuries of luxury
and over-indulgence in worldly affairs resulting in disunity and injustice
Idealists like Max Weber, Windelband and Rickert: Objects of History are not units with
universal qualities; they are unique, unrepeatable events in a particular space and a
specific time. No Law can be formed about them.
Saint Simon, Herbert Spencer, Karl Marx, Madelbaum and Wiener: Law of Mechanical
Causality is universal in its sway. Historical events also follow one another according to the
unswerving laws of nature.
So what is that law that governs the March
of History? Huntington, Hegel & Marx
Hegel
Dialectical Idealism --- History is a process of ideological antagonisms
and their reconciliations. The world for him is the development of the
idea/intellegence
Process: Thesis + Antithesis = Synthesis
This linear progress of the Idea, in winning rational freedom, culminates
in the State, the best example of which is German State.
Dialectical Materialism Karl Marx
The world-stuff is not the idea, but Matter.
The Struggle is a class-struggle.
The end is not reconciliation but destruction of one class
and triumph of another.
Bourgeois Vs Proletarians
The Communist Manifesto
Karl Marx & Friedrich Engels
It has four Parts:
1) Bourgeois and Proletarians
2) Proletarians and Communists
3) Socialist and Communist Literature
4) Position of the Communists in Relation to the various Existing
Opposition Parties.
