Resistanceto permanent
deformation(Stability) ability to resist
shoving and rutting under traffic. Stability of
mixture depends on the
Internal friction between aggregate particle
Shape and surface texture of aggregate particles
Proper aggregate gradation
Cohesion by the binder (Bitumen)
Binder content in the mix
Fatigue
resistance: Mix should not crack
when subjected to repeated load.
High density of the finished pavement is
important for long term pavement performance.

High density of the finished pavement is
important for long term pavement performance.
High density can be obtained with selecting proper
aggregate gradation.
Durability: is its ability to resist
disintegration by weathering and traffic. A
lack of durability can result in aging or
oxidation of the asphalt binder,
disintegration of the aggregate, and stripping
of the asphalt film from the aggregate.
Resistance to Low temperature cracking:
mainly depends on the low temperature
properties of asphalt binder.

Resistance to moisture induced Damage
(Impermeability)
Moisture introduction to the mix lose the adhesion
between aggregate surface to the asphalt binder
Properties of aggregate primarily responsible
Skid resistance: is the ability of a hot mix
asphalt pavement surface to minimize skidding
or slipping of vehicle tires, particularly when
wet.
best skid resistance is obtained by a rough-textured
aggregate in a relatively open-graded mixture.
Flushing or bleeding of excess asphalt binder in the
mix to the pavement surface can create serious skid
resistance problems.
