ELEPHANTS: Habitat
Africans Elephants (Loxodonta africana and Loxodonta cyclotis) inhabit Sub-Saharan Africa. They can
survive in many habitats such as tropical rain forests, savannas, grasslands, and woodlands (Blanc,
2008). They may sometimes dwell in mild deserts or mountains. One hundred years ago, elephant
populations in Africa were estimated to be several million elephants. Today, African elephant populations
are estimated to be between roughly 302,000 and 486,000 elephants
Asian Elephants (Elephas maximus) are found in southern and eastern Asia. They can be found in
tropical evergreen and deciduous forests and grasslands. Asian elephant populations have decreased
from an estimated 100,000 elephants 75 years ago to an estimated 40-50,000 elephants today
