PVC

Poly(vinyl chloride), commonly abbreviated PVC, is the third most

widely produced plastic, after polyethylene and polypropylene.

PVC is used in construction because it is more effective than

traditional materials such as copper, iron or wood in pipe and
profile applications. It can be made softer and more flexible by the
addition of plasticizers, the most widely used being phthalates.

PROPERTIES
PVC polymer is chemically stable,
neutral and non- toxic.

PVC's major benefit is its

compatibility with many different
kinds of additives, making it a
highly versatile polymer.

Mechanical properties

PVC has high hardness and mechanical properties.

The mechanical properties enhance with the molecular
weight increasing, but decrease with the temperature
increasing.
The elastic modulus can reach to 1500-3,000 MPa.
The soft PVC (Flexible PVC) elastic is 1.5-15 MPa.
However, elongation at break is up to 200% -450%. PVC
friction is ordinary, the static friction factor is 0.4-0.5,
the dynamic friction factor is 0.23.
Mechanical properties
Creep Modulus For PVC, the modulus or stress/strain relationship must
be considered in the context of the rate or duration of loading and the
temperature.

Abrasion Resistance
Plastics generally show excellent performance under abrasive conditions.
Thermal properties
The heat stability of PVC is very poor, when the
temperature reaches 140 C PVC starts to
decompose.
Its melting temperature is 160 C.
The linear expansion coefficient of the PVC is small
and has flame retardancy, the oxidation index is up
to 45 or more.
Therefore, the addition of a heat stabilizer during
the process is necessary in order to ensure the
product's properties.
Electrical properties

PVC is a polymer with good insulation properties but

because of its higher polar nature the electrical
insulating property is inferior to non polar polymers
such
as polyethylene and polypropylene.
As the dielectric constant, dielectric loss tangent
value and volume resistivity are high, the corona
resistance is not very good, it is generally suitable for
medium or low voltage and low frequency insulation
materials.

ADVANTAGES OF WINDOW
LOWER ENERGY COSTS. VINYL WINDOWS KEEP HEAT IN DURING WINTER
AND OUT DURING SUMMER. THIS REDUCES HEATING AND AIR
CONDITIONING USAGE FOR LOWER ENERGY BILLS.

MAINTENANCE FREE. VINYL WINDOWS ARE NEARLY 100 PERCENT

SCRATCH FREE. THEY NEVER HAVE TO BE PAINTED, SCRAPED, OR
STAINED AND THEYRE EASILY CLEANED WITH SOAP AND WATER.
BECAUSE THEYRE RESISTANT TO THE ELEMENTS, THEY DONT AGE AS
FAST AS OTHER WINDOWS.

INEXPENSIVE. VINYL IS THE LEAST EXPENSIVE OF ALL WINDOW

MATERIALS, BUT THIS DOESNT MEAN VINYL WINDOWS ARE LOW
QUALITY. VINYL IS DURABLE, AND IT WONT RUST OR CORRODE.

VARIETY. VINYL WINDOWS HAVE MANY COLOR, SIZE, AND STYLE

OPTIONS. THEY CAN ALSO BE CUSTOM MADE. COLORS RANGE FROM
CHAMPAGNE TO FOREST GREEN, AND SIZES RANGE WIDELY. VINYL50
WINDOWS ARE AVAILABLE IN STYLES FROM AWNING TO PICTURE.
DISADVANTAGES OF WINDOW
VULNERABILITY. IN EXTREME WEATHER CONDITIONS VINYL CAN
DISCOLOR. THIS IS ESPECIALLY TRUE IN INTENSE HEAT. THEY CANT BE
REPAINTED, SO WHEN THIS HAPPENS, THE WINDOW HAS TO BE
REPLACED.

CUSTOMIZATION COSTS. VINYL WINDOWS ARE DIFFICULT TO SHAPE, SO

MANUFACTURERS USE A PROCESS CALLED EXTRUSION TO GET THE JOB
DONE. FOR STANDARD WINDOWS THE COSTS ARE MINIMAL, BUT
CUSTOM WINDOWS CAN COST MORE DEPENDING ON THE SCALE OF
THE PROJECT.

LOW RESALE VALUE. VINYL WINDOWS DONT ADD AS MUCH VALUE TO

THE HOME AS DO OTHER TYPES OF WINDOW REPLACEMENTS.

51
FLOORING
Flexible PVC flooring is inexpensive and used in a variety of
buildings covering the home, hospitals, offices, schools, etc.
Complex and 3D designs are possible due to the prints that
can be created which are then protected by a clear wear
layer. A middle vinyl foam layer also gives a comfortable and
safe feel.
The smooth, tough surface of the upper wear layer prevents
the build up of dirt which prevents microbes from breeding in
areas that need to be kept sterile, such as hospitals and
clinics.
Benefits of PVC flooring
Durable
Freedom of aesthetic effects available in a wide range
of colours and patterns
Ease of installation, easy to clean
Easily recyclable
Variable thickness
PVC PLUMBING MATERIAL
Pipes
PVC pipes have been in use for over 60 years. When compared
with traditional pipe materials, PVC offers valuable energy
savings during production, low cost distribution and a safe,
maintenance-free lifetime of service.
PVC pipes will not degrade to damage the environment and
suffer fewer breaks / leaks than other alternatives.

PVC is widely specified for pipeline systems for water, waste and
drainage due to its a theoretical service life of hundreds of years
for buried pipes. PVC pipes suffer no build-up, pitting, scaling or
corrosion and provide smooth surfaces reducing energy
requirements for pumping.

PVC ROOFING/ COVERING MATERIAL
Reinforced pvc roofing is easy to install
Pvc has low maintanence requirments and lasts for over
30 years.

PVC sheets are also used as coverings like the sheds in

railway platforms ,air base shed , nurseries made of PVC.
This is very cost effective as compared to traditional tin
shed which are very heavy and have heat absorbent
nature .
Applications of PVC in London Olympics
Tensile fabric structures
Cables
Pipes
High performance sports surfaces and seating
A very large amount of the PVC used, especially in temporary structures, has
been recycled thanks to technologies like Texyloop, which has been developed
with the support of Vinyl 2010. Some structures have been completely
dismantled and shipped to Brazil where they will be re-used in the football
arenas being built for the next FIFA World Cup in 2014.
