The Ancient Egyptians


lived along the banks

A Pharaoh was the most important and


powerful person in the kingdom. He was the
head of the government and high priest of
every temple. The people of Egypt considered
the pharaoh to be a half-man, half-god.
The Pharaoh owned all of Egypt.
Egyptians thought that the
dead people travel through
the underworld and then
come back alive.

It was very important to ancient Egyptian


religious beliefs that the human body was
preserved. A method of artificial preservation,
called mummification was developed by the
ancient Egyptians. Mummification was a
complicated and lengthy process which lasted
up to 70 days.
The ancient Egyptians believed that temples
were the homes of the gods and goddesses.
Every temple was dedicated to a god or
goddess and he or she was worshipped there
by the temple priests and the pharaoh.

The large temple buildings were made of stone


so that they would last forever. Their walls
were covered with scenes that were carved
onto the stone then brightly painted. These
scenes showed the pharaoh fighting in battles
and performing rituals with the gods and
goddesses.
