WHAT IS WQM?
-water quality modelling simulates pollutants
and the state of selected water quality
variables in water
- Can be achieved using mathematical functions
or computer softwares (e.g WASP)
- WQM depends on the use of water i.e.
domestic, industrial and agricultural
Why is WQM important?
• Simulation of pollutants is important because
we have waste water being deposited in the
water bodies and the same being a source for
water to be treated for domestic purposes
• Hence its important to maintain a balance
DISSOLVED OXYGEN
• Water quality models focus on particular
problem contexts such as dissolved oxygen,
temperature and pH.
• Dissolved oxygen (DO) is a more natural
approach which measures the health of an
aquatic system.
• Encampases more parameters than other
modelling techniques hence its favoured
• Determined by measuring the concerntration
Dissolved oxygen interactions in a
water body
SOURCES OF DO
*Atmosphere- by re-aeration
*de-nitrification-
*other inputs-chemicals that breakdown to
produce oxygen
*photosynthesis- from aquatic plants
6CO2 +6H2O ↔ C6H12O6 + 6O2
DISSOLVED OYGEN DEPLETORS
*Respiration
*carbonaceous compounds which use oxygen in their
breakdown
*Nitrogenous compounds which use oxygen during
nitrification
*physical water pollution e.g oil spills which cover the
water surface affecting re-aeration process
*thermal pollution e.g where rivers meet temperature
changes occur and an increase reduces DO saturation
*sedimentation processes- runoff washes material into
water sources which settle at the bottom
Factors affecting oxygen balance
1) BOD addition from surface runoff
2) Removal of DO by diffusion into the bottom mud
to satisfy oxygen demand
3) BOD addition by diffusion of soluble organic
matter from bottom deposits
4) Addition of DO by photosynthetic activities of
plants
5) Removal of DO by respiration
6) Continual redistribution of DO and BOD by
longitudinal dispersion
