ASSESSMENT
1. Assignment 1: Informal Proposal (30%)
• Group Assignment (3-4 persons)
• Given out in Week 6 and due on Week 10
2. Mid Term Assessment (10%)
• Topics assessed is from Week 1 to Week 6
• 50 MCQ to be completed in one hour
• Total 50 marks converted to 10%
• Individual marks

3. Technical Presentation(10%)
• Presentation Brief given out in Week 9
• Individual Presentation
• Maximum 5 minutes Presentation
• Topics to be technical in nature
• Total Marks is 100 marks converted to 10%

FINAL EXAMINATION
THREE sections to be assessed:
1. Section A: Technical Descriptions (40%)
• Either a Technical Process Description or a Technical
Description of Mechanism will be assessed.
2. Section B: Technical Reading Comprehension (30%)
• 7-8 Questions including contextual clues.
3. Section C: Technical Reports (30%)
• Answer ONE question only in this section. You will be
tested on any of the reports taught.

INFORMATION RETRIEVAL
• Use BOOLEAN expressions to refine your search
• AND, OR, AND/OR, NOT
• Use quotation marks to define exact match searches
• For academic-related materials use Google Scholar to
reduce number of hits on a search

• To retrieve specific filetypes from the Internet use the
following command in Google Search:
• Filetype: <filetype extension> <search keywords>

EXAMPLE OF SEARCH
EXPRESSION
If you want to look for PDF files containing information on
space exploration in Russia but not in Kaliningrad you
could refine your search with the following expression:

Filetype: pdf “space exploration” AND “Russia” NOT


“Kaliningrad”

This will give you the optimal number of hits for efficient
information retrieval

INFORMATION SOURCE
Establish credibility of the source through these aspects
1. Author (is the author credible?)
2. Purpose of Source (what is the source’s purpose?)
3. Objectivity (is the source biased?)
4. Recent( in the last 5 years) (how up-to-date it is?)
5. Accuracy (is the information accurate?)
6. Reliability and Credibility (has the information been
well-researched?)
7. Links/References (does the source provide references
or further links?)

CONSIDERATIONS ON
NOTE TAKING
• Note taking is a form of revision
• It is a continuous process
• Each iteration of the notes is more summarized
• Many methods have been proposed for efficient note-
taking
• Methods vary according to type of content or
knowledge being revised
• Use methods that are suitable for your learning style. For
e.g Mind mapping, list making, etc.

MIND MAPPING ™
1. Visual representation of information.
2. Allows for rapid scanning of information.
3. Information arranged according to LEVELS.
4. Levels are hierarchal in nature : The higher the level,
the more specific the information.
5. You may be familiar with this method, use it as it is
reportedly the fastest way to prepare to write.
