The American Revolution was when the United States had its first
1 war. It was during this war that the states united, forming into a large
force instead of many segmented parts. The decision to come
together was one of the most important things they could decide,
because it laid the foundation for the US in the future.

The United States nearly separated when the south wanted to

2 secede from the north, forming its own nation. The US government,
including the president, Abraham Lincoln, refused, and war broke
out. The north was the victor, and the south remained a part of the
US. The south also had to stop using slave labor, which was the first
small step for black people to get their rights.
The country changed with the introduction of huge factories. People
3 used to make things at home to sell, but, with the introduction to mills
and factories, mass production and monotony became the normal
way to make objects. Men, women, and children could all be found in
these factories, working for a very small pay.

During and after the Industrial Revolution, immigrants poured into

4 the US. Big cities became crowded with people of all ethnicities, and
people often referred to the US as a melting pot for all people. One
entrance to the US was Ellis Island in New York Bay, where many
immigrants went through the system to get into the United States.

Eventually, people became dissatisfied with the corrupt government

5 system. Presidents put people into positions in the government just
because they were supporters of their campaign, and big business
crushed all competition. Poorly paid workers worked endlessly to
make money for the big corporation owners.

Due to the US’s Industrial Revolution, it became one of the main
6 producers of goods. The US joined the scramble for territory, and,
under President Theodore Roosevelt, became a world power. The
US gained control of Hawaii, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Philippines,
and several other islands at the time.

When the United States entered World War I, a lot changed within
7 the economy. The government changed and got rid of some
freedoms of the people, including the ability to say bad things about
the government. They also had the businesses focus on the
production of wartime products.

The Twenties were the time of celebration after the war ended.
8 Women wore shorter skirts and cut their hair, and people placed their
money in the stock market. The economy boomed due to the other
countries owing the US money that they had loaned during the war,
and the supplies seemed endless.

After the stock market crashed, people tried to take money out of the
9 banks all at once. Before long, the whole system was destroyed.
Unemployment was at an all time high, and many people were
forced to move away from their farms due to the dust storms. Many
blamed Herbert Hoover, the president, for the Great Depression.

The New Deal, proposed by President Franklin Roosevelt, was an

10 attempt to change their situation. He created jobs, put money back
into banks, and helped the unemployed still manage to survive
during the hard time. His plan eventually failed but he greatly
impacted the country in a positive way.
