(from the text):
The article was about how certain tools and products
redefined themselves. The eventual consequences of what we design,
make, invent, and use, all centre on pollution factors and global
warming. The advertising media has created a climate that deeply
influences our aesthetic and associational expectations.
The main argument is that the crucial issue for
designers today concern systems, processes and goods that protect
the environment and are ecologically benign, and that the other,
almost equally important areas are those designers have
frequently neglected – the elderly, the disadvantaged and all
others who have special needs.
In conclusion, the culture of a country shapes its
forms and these forms eventually shape us.
-----
SO BASICALLY THE SEVENTH CHAPTER IS ALL ABOUT
THE EVOLUTION OF THE PROCESS AND
CONSIDERATIONS IN DESIGNING TOOLS AND
EQUIPMENT THAT CONTRIBUTED TO THE WIDENING
PROBLEM OF GLOBAL WARMING, AND HOW THESE
PRODUCTS HAVE INFLUENCED OUR WAY OF LIVING
WHICH EVENTUALLY LEAD US TO THE PARTICIPATION
OF WORSENING THE SITUATION OF OUR ENVIRONMENT
THAT RESULTS TO ITS DEPRECIATION.

DESIGNING FOR THE
MOMENT
•THE PREVIOUS GRAPH SHOWS THE
DIFFERENCE OF THE TIME SPENT
IN PREPARING THINGS SUCH AS
THE BALI OFFERINGS , GABLES OF
TORADJA HOUSES , SAND CASTLES
ICE CASLTES , KITES AND OTHERS
FROM THE TIME SPENT CONSUMING
IT .
•IT IS GREATLY EMPHASIZED IN THE
READING HOW WE ENJOY THE
IMPERMANENCE OF THE THINGS WE
DO AND THIS “ JOY OF
IMPERMANENCE ” ( AS DESCRIBED IN
THE READING ) HELD US ADDICTED
TO “ EPHEMERAL ” THINGS .
DESIGNING FOR THE
MOMENT
THE FUN
OBJECT
•THE PIE GRAPH ON THE PREVIOUS SLIDE DEPICTS THE WAY
THINGS ARE, THE RATIO OF THE DIFFERENT CONSIDERATIONS
TAKEN BY THE MANUFACTURERS AS WELL AS THE CONSUMERS.
•IT IS STRESSED OUT IN THE TEXT THAT DUE TO THE
INFLUENCE OF THE MARKET DURING THE 1980s, PEOPLE
UNDERSTOOD A DIFFERENT MEANING OF FUN, WHICH IS TO
MARKET AND BUY FUN. THIS THINKING IS IMPRINTED TO US,
UNTIL NOW.
•“THE MORE T HURTS THE BETTER IT IS FOR US” AS STATED
IN THE TEXT, PEOPLE THINKS THAT IF HE WORKS HARDER HE
COULD BUY MUCH MORE FUN. AND THIS THINKING WAS A
PRODUCT OF THE 1980s MARKETING OF FUN.

THE FUN
OBJECT
Designers
introduced new
styles of forms to
new objects , from
stylized
abstractions of
plant - forms to
aerodynamical
designs –
‘ streamlining ’.

FASHIONS IN
FORM
FASHIONS IN
FORM
In the late
1960s and
early 1970s
some anti -
design shops
opened . These
shops saw
truth and
virtue in the
simple tools
of everyday
life , and felt
no need to
canonize
ANTI-
individual
designers .
DESIGN
s
The evolution of
certain things like
the fishing tackle is
an example of this
topic . Fishing
requires great skill
but with the invention
of the fishing tackle
that is a combination
of fishing reel and
slingshot even
unskilled fishermen
could act like a
professional .

TOY OR
TOOL?
In this subtopic , the writer emphasizes the
role of some things or tools . Sometimes , tools
with a certain function are altered and
manufactured in a way that it has become a
‘ toy ’. Taken for example is a fishing tackle .
In Norway , a firm made a combination of
fishing reel and slingshot . Thus , it makes fly -
casting too easy . Fishing , in real life ,
requires skill to master this hobby but with
the invention of the fishing tackle - cum -
slingshot , the process of learning the skill
is eliminated . TOY OR
TOOL?
The quality of the product is not the only
thing that is taken into account because the
selling price also has changed . Products today
are much cheaper than it was ages ago . This is
because of the technology that we have today .
Before , if you want high - end products with
superior functions , you have to pay a lot for
it . Nowadays , equipments and tools with the
same function are sold with a much lower
price .
TOY OR
TOOL?
THE MEANING OF
OBJECTS
The meanings of objects are divided
into two ways . First is the way the
society accepts new tools or
equipment just like how people
adapted to the ever changing cover
of television sets , from wood to
plastic . Second is the way things
are made . Before there is the
connection of the maker to its
product but because of machines ,
that connection is lost .
THE MEANING OF
OBJECTS
The meaning of objects
1 . the way in which a changing society
accepts new tools and artefacts example :
• Before , television sets were designed
with a fake walnut – grain pattern
• Today , plain metal or plastic boxes
covered the television sets
• The emergence of multimedia on our home
computers
2 . way in which things are made
• Before , things are carefully handcrafted
by its maker but because of contemporary
production methods , things are just made in
an instant THE MEANING OF
OBJECTS
IMPLICATION
S TO DESIGN
In this chapter , the writer talks about how
certain things are just being made for fun ,
losing its true sense and function . Some
inventions or design only lasts up for a
couple of months . One example the writer
pointed out are the inventions of gadgets
like cameras . Cameras before were very
sophisticated tools which can only be used by
professional photographers . At present , its
function and design are compensated . Because
of modern technology , the birth of disposable
cameras pushed through . Photography used to
require very expensive and highly specialized
equipment but now even disposable cameras can
shoot panoramic shots . Panoramic shots are
now available to everybody .
The bottom - line is that first - rate
designing are put at hand just so tools and
other gadgets could be available to the
mass . This is being done by its
manufacturers to earn more money for their
company . They modify their products in a
way that common people could use their
products conveniently or user - friendly .
Putting these thoughts in design , future
architects like us should be aware of the
structures or buildings that we are
designing . Good designing are the ones
which are designed to last for centuries .
Not like the things that are discussed in
this chapter which only lasted for some
time . Unlike in other things , gadgets or
tools , there is no such thing as disposable
buildings . This means that a building
should be well - designed and should not
lose its function .
