One of the oldest Cable-stayed
Carriage-way Bridge
Cable-Stayed Bridges
• Piers or Pylons – the vertical supporting structures
• Cables or stay-strand – thick steel ropes from which
the decking is suspended
• Decking – the supported roadway on a bridge
Pylon
It is a simple compressive member with uniaxial
bending as a column, with a minor difference of
arrangement of stay-cables through it.
After Concreting
Stay-Cable
It is Collection of thick wires, each wire is called
Strand. The strands are collected together and
twisted so that it shall remain together are
called cables.
Deck
It is a slab or 2D/planer structure used to
provide a surface on the bridge for the proper
movement of traffic upon it. Sometimes depth is
increases to add the beam action when span of
deck is long.
Eg:
I-girder,
Box-girder, etc.
Force is transfer Mechanism
1. Mainly by Tension AND Compression
2. Locally by Bending
Method of Construction
Mainly two methods are there :
• On site casting of deck above the shuttering.
• Using Precast segments to construct with
shuttering is called segmental construction.
• Using Precast segments to construct without
shuttering is called Balanced Cantilever
Method.
Balanced Cantilever Method of
Construction
Three types:
1. The segments are connected with cables as
intrados.
2. The segments are connected with cables as
extrados.
3. The segments are connected with cable as both
intrados and extrados.
In type 2 and 3, if extrados cables are arranged
as stay-cables then the bridge is termed as
cable-stayed bridge.
Balanced Cantilever Method of
Cable stayed Bridge
When the different segments are held at there
position with the help of the stay-cables to make
the construction possible.
Use of form traveller to place the
segment.
Form Traveller
It is an equipment to place the segment in its
position.
Segments
The precasted small parts of the deck are called
segments.
Principle of Segment connection
The main principle is that each segment shall be
so made that it obeys the three equations of
equilibriums in 2D.
1. Sum of Vertical Forces = 0,
2. Sum of Horizontal Forces = 0,
3. Sum of moment about any point = 0.
