QUASI RESEARH DESIGN

DEFINITION
Quasi Experiment have been defined as “experiments that
have treatments, outcome measures and experimental units
but do not use random assignment to create the comparisons
from which treatment –caused change is inferred.”

Quasi Experiment is quite similar to experimental design but it does

not have “random assignment”.
It is very widely used for measuring social variables.
There are two classic Quasi Experiment design which is :
(i) The Non-Equivalent groups
• it is mostly used in social research.
• groups that are similar is used to compare with the treated one
and the comparison one.
• uses pre-test and post test.
(ii) The Regression-discontinuity.
• A useful method for determining whether a program of
treatment is effective.
• Participants are assigned to program or comparison groups
based on a cutoff score on a pretest.
STRENGTHS
1. It provides clear comparisons between 2 groups.
• using treatment and control group.
2. Enables to reduce time and resources needed for
experimenting.
• does not need extensive pre-screening ad
randomization.
3. Essential in producing results in social science studies.
• difficult pre-selection and randomization of groups.
WEAKNESS
1. The experiment has no control over any variables.
2. Difficult to replicate hence reliability is not easy to
check.
3. It can be very time consuming.
4. With the absence of proper random assignment,
statistics test may be insignificant.
5. Potential for non-equivalent groups.
6. Potential for low internal validity.
When To Use Quasi Experiment Design
 Quasi experimental methods that involves the creation of a comparison group are most
often used when it is not possible to randomize individuals or groups to treatment and
control groups.

 Quasi experimental design is usually used when it involves comparing the changes
between on group that receives the intervention and a non intervention control group.

 Quasi method is also used after an intervention has taken place or for intervention that
are spread over a longer duration.
