GREENHOUSE GAS SYMBOL SOURCE
Occurs naturally. Other
sources are landfills,
CARBON DIOXIDE CO2 coal mines, paddy
fields, natural gas
systems, livestock,
burning of fossil fuels.
Generated by burning
fossil fuels, in the
NITROUS OXIDE N2O manufacture of
fertilizer and by
cultivation of soils.
GREENHOUSE GAS SYMBOL SOURCE
Human - made
chemicals. A by-
PERFLUOROCARBONS VARIOUS product of aluminum
COMPOUNDS smelting. Also used as
(PFCs)
a replacement for
CFCs in manufacturing
semiconductors.
Human - made
chemical. Used largely
HYDROFLUOROCARBON VARIOUS
S (HFCs)
COMPOUNDS in refrigeration and
insulating foam.
GREENHOUSE GAS SYMBOL SOURCE
Used largely in heavy
industry to insulate
SULFUR SF6 high voltage
HEXAFLUORIDE equipment and to
assist in the
manufacture of cable
cooling systems.
Naturally occurring.
WATER VAPOUR H2O Rising global
temperatures may act
to increase water
vapour in the
atmosphere.
GREENHOUSE GAS SYMBOL SOURCE
Naturally occurring.
Also created by
reactions involving
nitrogen oxide gases
resulting from motor
OZONE O3 vehicles and power
plants. Ozone at
ground level and in the
lower atmosphere is
linked with smog and
health problems.
GREENHOUSE GAS SYMBOL SOURCE
Methane comes from
many different sources,
which include garbage
dumps, cows, termites
and farming rice.
METHANE CH4 Methane is mainly
produced when material
decomposes in a moist,
air-tight environment.
Methane gas can be
burned. This is why
methane is often used in
natural gas, which can be
used to heat your home.
