Of Letting Go…
"You don't ever have to feel guilty about
removing toxic people from your life. — you
don't have to make room for people who cause
you pain or make you feel small. if a person
disregards your feelings, ignores your
boundaries, and "continues" to treat you in a
harmful way, they need to go."
— Daniell Koepke

Problem-tree Analysis

“ Ano ang

ng maagang
pagbubuntis”
Instruction
• Divide into 3 groups. Each group will receive manila
papers and pentels

• Draw a tree; in the main trunk, write teenage

pregnancy; then discuss about the multiple and
interrelated consequences of teenage pregnancy,
and write them in the branches and sub-braches
e.g. Teenage pregnancy – taking good care of child ---- sub-
branch: providing shelter, milk and clothing ----sub-branch:
look for work to buy needs--- sub-branch: consequences of
looking for work

• Choose a documenter and a reporter; you have 15

minutes to complete the task
Risks for Teen Moms
RISKS TO HEALTH
• Associated with pregnancy-
induced high blood pressure,
poor weight gain, anemia,
STI, bleeding
• Maternal death is 2x more
than adult
 Some pregnant adolescents
choose induced abortion
– Abortion is illegal,
usually done in ways that
are medically threatening
RISKS FOR TEEN MOMS

ECONOMIC
– Poor nutrition and health
for both the mother and the
child.
– Support from the child’s
father is usually minimal or
none at all.
– Fewer opportunities for
employment especially if
educational attainment has
been impaired
Risks Teen Moms
SOCIAL RISKS
– School interruption
– Unemployment and Poverty
RISKS FOR YOUNG PARENTS

EMOTIONAL
– young mother and young
father adolescents are not
emotionally mature
enough to be parents.

– If marriage is forced, it
may not be a satisfactory
solution and it has a
higher probability of
ending in failure.
KNOW YOUR
BODY….
KNOW YOUR
FERTILITY …
HUMAN FERTILITY
• What do you know about human fertility.
– Fertility is about having a baby.
– It involves male and female reproductive
organs, and the brain

• Define what joint fertility is.

– Although it is the woman who gets pregnant
and goes through childbirth,

– fertility involves contributions from the male

and female. It is joint.
– Joint fertility involves united and equal contribution
of male and female in the decision and ability to have
a child.
2. MALE FERTILITY DIAGRAM
• When does male fertility begin?
– A man is fertile EVERYDAY of his life starting
from puberty.
• What is male contribution to fertility.
– Male fertility means he is able to get a woman
pregnant

– In the conception of a child, the male

contributes the sperm. The sperm can live 5
days inside the woman’s body
 when does male fertility end?
– Male fertility ends at death.
3. FEMALE FERTILITY
• When does female fertility start?
– At puberty, a girl starts to menstruate.
– This means she can get pregnant.
– She is fertile from the onset of her first menses.

• What is the female contribution to joint

fertility.
– In the conception of a child, the female contributes
the egg.
– An egg is released at ovulation, which occurs once
during each menstrual cycle
– A woman is fertile for a few days a month ONLY
when an egg is present.
When does female fertility end?
 Female fertility ends at menopause.
4. JOINT FERTILITY DIAGRAM
• How does the sperm and egg meet?
- The sperm and egg meet through lovemaking

• Pregnancy results from lovemaking during the

fertile days only.
 A baby results from lovemaking only during
the woman’s fertile days when she releases
an egg.

The sperm unites with the egg to produce a

baby.
5. PHASES OF THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE-No
Pregnancy
• What is a cycle?
 It is the period from the first day of
menstruation until the day before the next
menstruation.
the phases of the menstrual cycle.
6. PHASES OF THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE--
Pregnancy Occurs
• What difference do you notice between the
previous visual and this visual?

 Sperms are present in the illustration of the

woman’s ovulatory and post ovulatory phases.

 If the sperm meets the egg, it may result to a

pregnancy
6. PHASES OF THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE--
Pregnancy Occurs
• Similarity between planting
season and woman’s fertility.
– Planting during dry season will
not result in growth of crop.

– Lovemaking during woman’s dry

period or infertile time will not
result in pregnancy.

– Planting during wet season,

when followed by the sun, will
produce growth.
6. PHASES OF THE MENSTRUAL CYCLE--
Pregnancy Occurs
 Lovemaking during woman’s wet period or
fertile time will result in pregnancy.

 After the rain, when the sun comes out,

only the topsoil is dry.

 The bottom soil remains wet.

 The 3 days after the LAST day of wetness

are still considered fertile days.

 This is to give allowance for the life span

of the egg cell.
PREGNANCY OCCURS
PREVENTING TEEN
PREGNANCY
 KEEPING ABSTINENT is
the surest way to avoid
pregnancy and other
problems, such as sexually
transmitted infections.

— Abstinence requires
self-discipline.
PREVENTING TEEN PREGNANCY
MODERN CONTRACEPTIVES as
other options for avoiding teen
pregnancy.

General Guideline
 Generally, adolescents are eligible to use
any method of contraception and must
have access to a variety of contraceptive
choices
Age does not constitute a medical reason
for denying any method to adolescents.

 Proper education and counselling both

before and at the time of method selection
can help adolescents make informed and
voluntary decisions

Combined Oral Contraceptive (COC) pills

• tablets containing hormones

Estrogen and Progestin

of day.

• Effective in preventing
pregnancy; no protection
against sexually transmitted
infections and HIV
Progestin-only Pills (POPs)
• tablets containing only a
very small amount of one
Progestin
• taken once daily at the
same time of day.
• POPs are appropriate and
safe for young people 16-
18 y/o and above.
• Very effective for
breastfeeding women
Depo-Provera (DMPA) Injectable Contraceptive

• an injection containing
the hormone Progestin,
given every 3 months,

• injected intramuscularly
in (buttock area) or
deltoid (upper arm)
areas.

young people 16-18 y/o
and above
Male Condom

20 years old and above, in
mutually monogamous

• Women < 20 y/o who have

not given birth have greater
risks for expulsion and painful
menses.

• Careful screening for STI

before insertion is important.

ARTIFICIAL – PERMANENT
METHODS
Vasectomy and Tubal Ligation
Vasectomy and Tubal Ligation

• These are permanent method of contraceptive

method.

• generally NOT recommended for people at the

beginning of their childbearing years
MODERN
CONTRACEPTIVES
NATURAL METHODS
Fertility Awareness-based Methods (FAB) or Natural Family
Planning (NFP) methods
— FAB methods involve identification of the fertile days
in the menstrual cycle , whether by:
a) Observing fertility signs
1. Cervical Mucus Method – observing cervical
secretions
2. Basal Body Temperature - observing basal body
temperature
b) Calendar –based methods
3. Standard Days Method

— NFP methods are very effective when used correctly
