ANSAL PLAZA

ABOUT THE ARCHITECT’S PHILOSOPHY

“Architecture is the celebration of life, both in the mythical

and real world, an expression of the conscious and
subconscious mind.”
-AR. SAWHNEY

Ar. Jasbir Sawhney strongly feels about the “need to create

spaces for work beyond pure function”, so it has some art
value.

He strongly believes that being a public space we have to AR. JASBIR SAWHNEY
treat like a street .It creates an interaction in different parts
of the building moves with the landscape.

DESIGN ELEMENTS

& FEATURES
OPEN AIR THEATRE

-The main feature of Delhi’s first mall is its

Central Plaza 80meter in diameter,
designed to be an inviting space which
includes the Open Air Theatre.
-Designed to be the roof over the
underground parking, it is seen as a
focus from which the red and buff
sandstone geometric flooring pattern
radiates pedestrian paths ton all
different zones of the complex.
-The Plaza has a direct or indirect
relationship with every component of
the mall.
SKYLIGHT,
CURTAIN WALLS,
FLYING BUTTRESS,
COFFERED SLABS
The designing of the mall was done in such a way
that
there is a clear and transparent relationship
between the interiors and exteriors:

-Skylights helped in making maximum use of the

daylight to brighten the interiors.
-Curtain walls aesthetically enhanced the beauty
of the elements of the mall, by letting in light while
blocking out the intense heat during summers.
-The concept of flying buttresses inspired from the
Gothic architecture, which helps in safely
transferring the load to the ground.
-Coffered slabs were used to acoustically improve
the ambience and reduce noise level within the
mall.
PLANNING AND LAYOUT
-Introvert in nature
-C- shaped plan

INFERENCES
• The central plaza with the Amphitheatre forms the axis of the
complex making a visual connection the radial axis.
• Facilitated with natural day light through curtain walls and
skylights.
• Curved shape of the corridors reduces the length and creates a
good visual sequence.
• The central public plaza attracts enough din and responsible for
large informal activities.
• Accessible to physically challenged and building forms plays a
vital role SKYLIGHT AT

COMPARISON WITH NEW ADVANCED
MALL
 The mall is not able to compete with the present day mall due to
the following reason
1. It does not have any magnet stores or any space which attract the
crowd such as. it does not have kid zone for kids , no theatre , as
other malls have.
2. It does not have new technology i.e. low in interior design or
astheic apeeal
3. It has a large interactive space but tha t space is a hard scape and
in summers it is hard to go out and hang out at that space
4. more over it haas select city mall like malls , so people like toh go
there due to more avaibility to satisfy there needs
PROPOSAL
1. focus on more landscaping by giving more vegetation in
amphitheater so that the microclimate is maintained
2. they can have semi covered amphitheater so that it can be
prevented fronm the harsh sun rays in the summer
3. they they should have seperate corner for services , a seperate
service lane or service lift
4. they can convert there mall to a food hub instead of making it a
multi purpose mall
