Project Goals and Constraints

 Projects should have specified golas,

 Goals can be described both by:


 Scope – “the sum of all products, services, and results to be provided
by the project”
 Quality – “the degree to which a set of inherent characteristics fulfils
requirements”.

 Scope + quality = Performance (good enough to satisfy


the customer)
Project Goals and Constraints

 General constraints are:


 Time
 Cost

 “If the project were to proceed exactly according to plan,


it would be on time, on budget, with the agreed upon
scope, and the agreed upon quality.”

 Which one to sacrifice? (Tough decision)


PMBOK

 Contains:
 5 process groups (initiating, Design and Planning, ..., Closing)
 9 knowledge areas

 Knowledge areas are:


 Scope management
 Time management
 Cost management
 Quality management
 Human Resources management
 Communications management
 Risk management
 Procurement management
 Integration management
Classification of projects

 Four main classifications:

 Industry (Manufacturing, Marketing & sales, Oil, Gas &


Petrochemicak, Aerospace & Defense, Automation systems,
Consulting)

 Size (level of details varies depending on the size)

 Understanding of project scope (easily to determine or not)

 Application
