INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING
AND PROBLEM SOLVING
1.1 CDIO…?
Conceive--Design--Implement—Operate

 It is a framework or an environment in which

students acquire the knowledge, skills, and
attitudes essential to begin their engineering
endeavor.
CDIO Background
 In January 2004, the CDIO Initiative adopted
12 standards that describe CDIO programs -
“The Guiding Principles”.

 A major international project to reform

undergraduate engineering education was
launched in October 2000. This project,
called The CDIO Initiative, has expanded to
include engineering programs worldwide.
CDIO Background (cont.)
 The vision of the project is to provide
students with an education that stresses
engineering fundamentals set in the context
of Conceiving--Designing--Implementing--
Operating (CDIO) real-world systems and
products.
Rationale:
 Beginning engineers should be able to
Conceive--Design--Implement--Operate
complex value-added engineering products,
processes, and systems in modern team-
based environments. They should be able to
participate in engineering processes,
contribute to the development of engineering
products, and do so while working in
engineering organizations. This is the
essence of the engineering profession.
 The CDIO Initiative has three overall goals -
to educate students who are able to:

 master a deep working knowledge of

technical fundamentals
 lead in the creation and operation of new
products, process, and systems
 understand the importance and strategic
impact of research and technological
development on society
 Conceiving-Designing-Implementing-
Operating is a model of the entire
product , process , and system lifecycle.
◦ The Conceive stage includes defining customer needs;
considering technology, enterprise strategy, and
regulations; and, developing conceptual, technical, and
business plans.
◦ The Design stage focuses on creating the design, i.e., the
plans, drawings, and algorithms that describe what will be
implemented.
◦ The Implement stage refers to the transformation of the
design into the product, process, or system, including
manufacturing, coding, testing and validation.
◦ The Operate stage uses the implemented product or
process to deliver the intended value, including
maintaining, evolving and retiring the system.

benefit people or society.
 They DO things: design, create, build, improve, invent -- everything
from heart valves and microchips to skyscrapers and space vehicles.
 Engineers should have these desirable characteristics:
1. Utilize mathematics and science to obtain practical workable solution
2. Think through problem solving in logical manner
3. Knack to organize and carry through problem solving to conclusion
4. Possess curiosity how thing s work
5. Thinker and self-learner

Definition of Engineering

According to ABET, Engineering is:

“The profession in which a knowledge of the mathematical and
natural sciences gained by study, experience, and practice is
applied with judgment to develop ways to utilize, economically,
the material forces of nature for the benefit of mankind.

According to Webster’s Dictionary:

Engineering is
“The application of math and science by which the properties of matter
and the sources of energy in nature are made useful to people.”

1.4 Mechanical engineering profession, domain
and disciplines

 Mechanical Engineering encompasses the design, analysis, testing

and manufacture of products that are used in every facet of modern
society. The mechanical engineer may design a component, a
machine, a system or a process. They will analyze their design using,
for examples, the principles of motion, energy, and force or other
related principles to insure the product functions safely, efficiently,
reliably, and can be manufactured at a competitive cost.
 Mechanical engineers work in the automotive, aerospace, chemical,
computer, communication, paper, and power generation industries.
Mechanical engineers will be found in virtually any manufacturing
industry. Increasingly, mechanical engineers are needed in the
environmental and bio-medical fields. Indeed virtually every product
or service in modern life has probably been touched in some way by
a mechanical engineer.
