business software for client/server computing. R/3 meets the needs of a
customer from the small grocer with 3 users to the multi-billion dollar
companies The software is highly customizable using SAP's proprietary
programming language, ABAP/4. R/3 is scalable and highly suited for
many types and sizes of organizations.

Enterprise was replaced with the introduction of ERP Central
Component (SAP ECC)

SAP - Advantages & Dis Advantages

Advantages :

ERP allows easier global integration (Barriers of currency exchange rates, language,
and culture can be bridged automatically)

Updates only need to be done once to be implemented company wide

Provides real-time information, reducing the possibility of redundancy errors

Creates a more efficient work environment making it easier for employees to do their
job which leads to effectiveness

Vendors have past knowledge and expertise on how to best build and implement a
system

Disadvantages

Locked into relationship by contract and manageability with vendor - a contract can
hold a company to the vendor until it expires and it can be unprofitable to switch
vendors if switching costs are too high

Inflexibility- vendor packages may not fit a company's business model exactly and
customization can be very expensive

Return on Investment may take too long to be profitable

SAP ERP implementations have a risk of project failure

Emerging Technologies-SAP
 SAP APO - SAP Advanced Planning & Optimization (SAP APO) is a software
solution that enables dynamic supply chain management. It includes applications for
detailed planning, optimization and scheduling, allowing the supply chain to be
accurately and globally monitored even beyond enterprise boundaries.
 SAP CRM - Customer relationship management (CRM) consists of the processes a
company uses to track and organize its contacts with its current and prospective
customers. CRM software is used to support these processes; information about
customers and customer interactions can be entered, stored and accessed by
employees in different company departments. Typical CRM goals are to improve
services provided to customers, and to use customer contact information for targeted
marketing.

SAP SRM - SRM is a discipline of working collaboratively with those suppliers that
are vital to the success of your organization, to maximize the potential value of those
relationships.

SAP SEM - Strategic Enterprise Management is part of the MySAP ERP software
from SAP AG. It is also called MySAP Financials SEM. It is the Strategic Enterprise
Management solution of SAP AG. It delivers end-to-end capabilities to support
financial consolidation, strategy management and performance management life

SAP SCM -Supply Chain Management spans all movement and storage of raw
materials, work-in-process inventory, and finished goods from point of origin to point

SAP MDM - Master Data Management (SAP MDM) enables master data on
customers, partners and products to be consolidated and harmonized across the
enterprise, making it available to all staff and business partners. A key component of
SAP Net Weaver, SAP MDM ensures data integrity across all IT systems.

SAP XI - Exchange Infrastructure (SAP XI) is SAP’s enterprise application integration

(EAI) software, a component of the NetWeaver product group used to facilitate the
exchange of information among a company’s internal software and systems and those
of external parties. Like other NetWeaver components, SAP XI is compatible with
software products of other companies.

SAP Webdynpro - Web Dynpro (WD) is a proprietary web application user interface
technology developed by SAP AG and exists in a Java (Web Dynpro for Java, WDJ or
WD4J) and an ABAP (Web Dynpro ABAP, WDA) flavor. Both have in general the
same functionality, but usually one flavor is improved after the other, so temporary
one flavor is more advanced than the other. Hence, the decision for one of the two
flavors shall be based on organizational and business circumstances, but not on
functionality.
SAP PLM - A strategic business approach that applies a set of business and IT solutions in support
of collaborative creation, management and use of product definition information across the extended
enterprise from concept to end of life – integrating people, processes, business systems, and
information. Product Life cycle consists of three interacting life cycles in the organization: product
definition, production definition and operational support..

SAP Netweaver - NetWeaver in simple words is an application and Integration platform in which
Web Services play a major role and which is open for Non-SAP applications and platform. It is used
by organizations to improve productivity and enhance efficiency by making all the resources that are
available in an enterprise to work collectively.

SAP EP : SAP Enterprise Portal, also known as an Enterprise Information Portal (EIP) or corporate
portal, is a framework for integrating information, people and processes across organizational
boundaries. It provides a secure unified access point, often in the form of a web-based user
interface, and is designed to aggregate and personalize information through application-specific port
lets. One hallmark of enterprise portals is the de-centralized content contribution and content
management, which keeps the information always updated.
