What is a habitat?
• The natural environment
and the living community
of plants, animals and
other organisms
determine an ecosystem.

• A habitat is the natural

area or environement
where a particular animal
or plant species lives.
Types of habitat
• Desert
• Arctic Tundra
• Forest
• Grassland
• Rain Forest
• Savannah
• Prairie
• Wetlands
• Marine
Desert

• Extremely dry air

• Little rain – less than 10
inches a year
• High daytime temperatures
• Lots of wind
• Typical animals include
insects, reptiles, birds, and
some little mammals
Arctic Tundra

• Extremely short growing seasons (6

to 10 weeks)
• Long, cold, dark winters (6 to 10
months)
• Low Precipitation
• Snow provides insulation
• Wildlife includes birds, reindeer,
foxes, bears, seals, and walruses
Forest

• Covers 1/3 of the Earth’s area

• Dominated by trees and woody vegetation
• Precipitation is distributed evenly
throughout the year
• Animal life includes many things such as
bears, deer,and rodents
Grassland

• Dominated by grasses
• Commonly flat or rolling terrains
• Soil almost completely covered by vegetation
• Commonly had fires and high winds
• Characterized by periods of rain followed by
periods of drought
Rainforest

• The Rain Forest is made of four layers:

1. The first is the emergent layer
2. The second is the canopy
3. The third is the understory
4. The fourth is the forest floor
• The Rain Forest contains about 50% of all animal
and plant species
• There live mammals, reptiles, birds, and
invertebrates. Mammals include primates
and felids. Reptiles include snakes and turtles
• Characterized by high rainfall
Savannah

• Warm, hot climates

• Major vegetation is grass
• Dry and rainy seasons
• Seasonal fires
• The Savannah is home to various
reptiles, rodents, birds, and large
mammals such as elephants or
giraffes, and felids like lions
Prairie

• Temperatures vary summer to winter

• Moderate rain fall
• Seasonal drought and occasional fires
• Typical animal life includes rabbits,
deer, foxes, coyotes or birds
Wetlands

• Water is present at least part of the year

• Plants are adapted to living in wet soils
• There are generally five kinds of areas where
we find wetlands:
1. Rivers
2. near coasts and lakes
3. in depressions where land is low
4. in flat areas that receive significant rainfall
Marine
• This environement include everything from
the layers of surface water to the depths
of the abyssal trenches, 10,000 meters or
more beneath the surface of the ocean
• Included habitats such as coral reefs, kelp
forests, tide pools, muddy, sandy and
rocky bottoms, and the open ocean zone
• There live numerous species of plants and
animals, specially fish, cetaceans and
seabirds. These range in size from
microscopic organisms to the huge whales
