FAP0015 Physics I
Course Learning Outcomes (CLO):
At the end of this course, students should be able to:
1. Describe physical quantities and the units used for their measurements
with considerations on their levels of uncertainty.
2. Explain the basic principles and concepts of mechanics, oscillations,
waves, fluids and heat and how they are applied in a physical world.
3. Analyse a physical system by applying principles of mechanics,
oscillations, waves, fluids and heat in order to solve problems
quantitatively
4. Demonstrate laws and concepts of mechanics, oscillations, waves,
fluids and heat via experimental exercises in laboratory.

The Course
• FAP0015 Physics 1 is a 5-credit hour course which includes
– 5 hours of lectures per week
– 2 hour laboratory (alternate weeks)
– 2 hour tutorials (alternate weeks)
• REGISTRATION: WEEK 1 (1030-1230, 1430-1630),
• BLOCK 19-01, 19-02
• PN. NAEMAH

Tutorial (5%)
• Students must sign up for a Tutorial Group at Block 19
• Tutorial session will start Week 2 (for GpA) or 3 (GpB) and continue until week 12.
(5 2hr-sessions, alternate weeks)
• The tutorial questions are available at the Physics Lab.
• Students must work out the problems in the tutorial before coming to class.
• Attendance is compulsory
• Grading:
1 Tutorials/Assignment ** (written work) 2%
2 Participation 2%
3 Attendance 1%
Total 5%
* The only accepted absences are sickness (with proper MC), death of immediate family member
(with death certificate) and official university activities (with official letter from advisor).
** Assignment refers to problems from text book as given in the Course outline.

Laboratory (15%)
• Students must sign up for a Lab group (different time slot from tutorial group).
• Lab sessions (week 2 - week 9) (4 experiments).
• Students must read the lab manual before coming to the lab.
• The Lab Manual is available at the Physics Lab.
• Attendance is compulsory – lab reports will not be accepted (0 mark) without attendance.
Marks will be deducted for late reports. Labs missed* must be made up in the same week.
• The marks for each lab report is based on the following:
1 Conducting the experiment 10
2 Oral presentation 10
3 Lab Report 30
Total 50
* Make up labs are only allowed for accepted absences i.e. sickness (with proper MC), death of
immediate family member (with death certificate) and official university activities (with official
letter from advisor).

Lab Test (5%)

• Lab Test will be conducted during Week 10-11 at


the student’s regular lab session time slots.
• No changes of lab time slots are allowed.
• There will be NO make ups for Lab Test.

Tests (20%)

• A total of two tests will be conducted.


• Tentative dates for the tests are given in the
Course Outline.
• Date, time and venue will be confirmed close to
the test date.
• No make up tests are allowed.

Quizzes (5%)
• At least 2 quizzes (without prior notice) will be
conducted during lecture hours.
• The number of quizzes and when they will be
conducted depend on the respective lecturers
for each group.
• No make up quizzes are allowed.

Final Exam (50%)
• Students must get at least 20% in the final
exam to pass the course. i.e. an F grade will
be given if student get less than 20% from the
Final exam (even if the total marks including
the coursework is more than 50%)
• Lecturers can bar any student from the Final
Exam (i.e. automatic F) if his/her attendance to
lecture is less than 90%

For Best Performance
• Prepare for class, read material in the text before the
lecture, then read the material again after class discussions
of the topics.
• Don’t miss class; get notes from someone if you have an
unavoidable absence.
• Study.
• Review and practice as necessary.
• Participate in class. Bring your calculator every day.
• Practice, practice, practice. Work lots of problems

Tutorials & Assignment
• Make sure you understand what the problem is asking before
you begin plugging numbers into equations.
• Try the worked examples in the book and from your notes—
without peeking!
• Try problems that have solutions in the back of the book.
• Draw a picture whenever possible.
• Pay attention to units.
• Don’t expect to always work straight through a problem. Wrong
turns and dead ends are often instructive.
• Check results to make sure they are reasonable.
• Get help—but only after trying the problem yourself.
