This industrial training report summarizes the study of a boiler. It describes a boiler as an enclosed vessel that converts water into steam using heat, with the steam then used to transfer heat to an industrial process. It outlines the main types of boilers as water tube and fire tube boilers. Water tube boilers have water passing through tubes and steam circulating around, while fire tube boilers have hot gases from combustion passing through tubes that surround circulating water. Mountings and accessories like safety valves, blow down valves, and superheaters are also described to ensure boiler safety and performance.

(ASTT. PROFESSOR) DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING BOILER Boiler is an enclosed vessel that provides a means for converting water into steam. The steam under pressure is then used for transferring the heat to a process. Water is a useful and cheap medium for transferring heat to a process. When water is boiled its volume increases by about 1600 times, producing a force that is almost as explosive as gunpowder. This causes the boiler to be extremely dangerous and must be treated with a lot of care TYPES OF BOILER WATER TUBE BOILER Water tube or “water in tube” boilers have water passing through the tubes and the steam circulates around it. The common water tube boilers are “D” type, “A” type, “O” type, bent tube and there are infinite number of boiler designs but generally they fit into one of the two categories: WATER TUBE BOILER FIRE TUBE BOILER Fire tube or “fire in tube” boilers, contain long steel tubes through which the hot gases from a furnace pass and around which the water to be heated circulates. In a fire tube boiler the heat (gases) from the combustion of the fuel passes through the tubes and is transferred to the water which is in a large cylindrical storage area. FIRE TUBE BOILER SUPER HEATER It is a device used to convert saturated steam or wet steam into superheated steam or dry steam. Super heaters are used in steam engines or in processes, such as steam reforming. There are three types of super heaters: radiant, convection, and separately fired. A super heater can vary in size from a few tens of feet to several hundred feet (a few meters to some hundred meters). BOILER MOUNTINGS Just installing a boiler on a ship doesn’t guarantee efficient working of a boiler. There are several mountings and attachments required to be fitted on the boiler to ensure its safety and quality performance. There are several mountings Main steam stop valve Safety valve Air release valve Feed check valve Blow down valve BOILER ACCESSORIES Boiler accessories are those components which are installed either inside or outside the boiler to increase the efficiency of the plant and to help in the proper working of the plant. Several accessories are as follows : Air preheater Economizer Super Heater Feed Pump Thank You.
